Lord Of The Rings: Rings Of Power Season 2 Finale: 9 Questions We Need Answered

3 Octubre 2024 at 14:32

Warning: The following contains full spoilers for the Season 2 finale of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. If you haven't watched the entirety of Season 2 yet, you should steer away now.

So much happened in the Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power Season 2 finale that it's hard to know where to begin. The beginning probably makes the most sense. The Season 2 finale kicked off with a major death as Durin IV (Owain Arthur) faced off against his father, Durin III (Peter Mullan). The king managed to chisel his way into a gigantic cavern of Mithril before awakening a giant Balrog. The monster got through to the king in a way that his son had not previously, and King Durin took off the corrupting ring of power and sacrificed himself to the fiery beast to save his people.

Durin's sacrifice allowed his son to finally send dwarf troops to assist Elrond (Robert Aramayo) and Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker) in defending Eregion. Unfortunately, it was too late. Sauron (Charlie Vickers) had already tortured Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) to death. The dwarf troops allowed Elrond and Gil-galad to lead refugees away from the ruined city, but the orcs turned on Adar (Sam Hazeldine) and joined Sauron. The Dark Sorcerer then faced off against Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and won, taking the nine rings of power Celebrimbor crafted for the humans off of her. Gild-galad and Elrond were able to heal her and create an oasis for the surviving Eregion elves, but Sauron remains at large.

Across Middle-earth, the stranger (Daniel Wyman) decided to stand by his harfoot friends rather than claim his destiny as a great wizard. Wouldn't you know it? That's what he was supposed to do all along. He saved Nori (Markella Kavenagh), Poppy (Megan Richards), and their new fellow halfling friends from the Dark Wizard (Ciarán Hinds). As a reward, he was delivered his staff and we can finally call him by his name: Gandalf. It took far too long to get to this point.

It will be a surprise to no one that the humans are also a mess. Pharazon (Trystan Gravelle) used the mystical ball to stage yet another coup in Númenor, but it looks like this one is going to stick. Eärien (Ema Horvath) finally developed some family loyalty and gave Elendil (Lloyd Owen) a heads up and he was able to escape before Pharazon's troops came to execute him. However, Tar-Míriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) stayed behind to face Pharazon on her own and was sentenced to death. Kemen (Leon Wadham) took troops to Middle-earth to set up a human garrison and ran into Isildur (Maxim Baldry). That's how the Middle-earth humans found out Pharazon had taken control and all of Míriel's promises from Season 1 were now void. Theo ) and Estrid (Nia Towle) remained behind to work for Kemen because he refused to allow low-class people aboard the ship to Númenor with Isildur, who decided to return home after Kemen's political update.

Major events happened for all of our main characters in the Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power Season 2 finale, but we still have a lot of questions. Read below for the biggest queries we need answered next season.

1. What happened to the other six Dwarven rings?

Celebrimbor and Sauron made seven rings total for the dwarven lords. Durin has his father's ring, but are the other six with the dwarf lords who are now trying to challenge Durin for the throne? It would be tough to take on six dwarf lords on a good day, but can Durin really take them on if they are also under Sauron's influence by wearing the rings? He just barely was able to get through to his father, and that still ended tragically. It'll be near impossible for him to stand up to six wealth-focused counterparts.

2. Will Durin and Elrond ever get to bro out again?

3. How will Sauron create the final ring without Celebrimbor?

Another thing that's concerning about the dwarf lords making their way to Khazad-dûm to challenge Durin is that his father just uncovered an absolute boat load of Mithril. Yes, there's a Balrog overseeing it, but the last thing Middle-earth needs is Sauron getting his hands on that supply. He currently has the nine rings made for the kings of men, but he doesn't have the elven or dwarf rings. We know he still needs to make "the one to rule them all," but how is he going to do that now that Celebrimbor is dead? We're scared to think that Khazad-dûm trove will give him a head start in making the fateful ring.

4. Where is Galadriel's husband?

We are going to dig a little into the book lore here because this mystery is leftover from Season 1 and is still bothering us. Galadriel explained to Isildur at the end of Season 1 that her husband disappeared in battle. He's presumed dead, but he actually can't be because she still needs to give birth to Elrond's future wife (Yes, that does make Elrond and Galadriel's little lip-lock in the penultimate episode a bit awkward!). So where the hell is Celeborn and how will he ever find the Elf oasis they've created with their rings now? We cannot wait to see the look on his face when Galadriel tells him how she was so nearly taken in by the dark sorcerer himself.

5. Will Isildur and Elendil ever reunite?

Elrond and Durin are not the only people on this show who need a hug. Isildur and Elendil could really do with a father-son reunion right about now. Are they destined to be ships passing in the night as Isildur returns to Númenor and Elendil flees the kingdom? They both wish to take down Pharazon, and it would be helpful to have each other on that quest. Hell, Elendil could use the knowledge that his son is still alive just to give him the will to live again. We know that Nûmenor is fated for deep trouble ahead, but let's give the humans a win before things go to complete crap.

6. What's going to happen if Theo cuts down trees?

The deal is that the men staying behind at the garrison must turn over timber to help build the new barracks in exchange for shelter and protection. That means cutting down the trees the Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova) swore wouldn't be harmed in exchange for Theo and the other human prisoners the Ent wives kept captive. Theo is staying in Middle-earth and ostensibly will be going to cut lumber, so what will happen when the men go back on Arondir's word? More specifically, what happens to Theo if he goes back on Arondir's word? We know the Ents become nearly impossible to convince to fight in Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and maybe Kemen and his damn orders are to blame.

7. Will karma ever come for Kemen?

This freaking guy. He sucks, okay? There's no way around it. He's a weasel and a disloyal scumbag with a punchable face. Not only did he sell out Elendil for ending a fight that Kemen himself started, but in general, he's a power-hungry suck-up. His dad is now the king of Nûmenor, which makes Kemen feel invincible, but it would be really fun to see someone bring this kid back down to Earth, preferably by kicking him multiple times. He's got to go!

8. Who is the Dark Wizard, and what does he want?

There are theories abundant on the internet about who the Dark Wizard is but the show hasn't given any definitive answers about who he is and how he'll play into the upcoming battle with Sauron and the creation of the One Ring. Does he truly want to team up with Gandalf to defeat Sauron, or does he have plans of his own? Was Gandalf right to predict that the Dark Wizard only wants to defeat Sauron so that he can take his place as the head of Middle-earth? It's not very clear whether this guy is actually evil or just misunderstood by those around him.

9. Will we ever get to meet a Hobbit?

Avatar: The Last Airbender "AAA" Game In Development At Space Marine 2 Studio Saber Interactive

3 Octubre 2024 at 13:53

Paramount Game Studios and Saber Interactive have officially confirmed that a "AAA" game set in the universe of Avatar: The Last Airbender is in development. Currently in production, the game is being produced in collaboration with Avatar Studios, a division launched by the show's original creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko back in 2021 so that the IP could expand through multiple forms of media.

The companies behind this game are calling it (via IGN) "the biggest video game in franchise history," and while details are slim right now, it has been confirmed that it will focus on an "all-new, never-before-seen Avatar" and is set thousands of years in the past of the Avatar Legends universe. Not to be confused with James Cameron's blockbuster movie franchise, Avatar tells the story of a world where humanity has learned to harness the four primal elements of nature.

Known as benders, these are people who can control water, earth, fire, and air through unique martial arts movements, but only one person can wield all four elements in harmony. That individual is the Avatar, a being who is charged with maintaining the balance between people and spirits. Only one Avatar can exist at any time, and upon death, they reincarnate and restart their journey to master the elements. For the game, Paramount and Saber says that players can expect dynamic combat, a vibrant world, and story elements both new and familiar to fans of the Avatar franchise.

Don't Expect A Remake Of The First Metal Gear Solid Anytime Soon

3 Octubre 2024 at 13:12

Remakes and remasters of classic games are nothing new, but definitely becoming more and more common, with games like Final Fantasy 7, Resident Evil 2 and 4, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 hitting consoles all in the past four years. However, even though we'll soon get a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3, don't expect one for the first entry anytime soon.

In an interview with Famitsu, and translated by business insider Genki, Metal Gear Solid series producer Noriaki Okamura didn't exactly shut down the possibility of other remakes--similar to the aforementioned Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, but made it abundantly clear there are no plans for another one shortly.

"Before everyone who was involved in the original is gone, we need to create a path to preserve the Metal Gear series for 10 or 50 years into the future," Okamura said. "I think this is something we have to do."

Who is The Stranger?

As reported by GamesRadar, in the season finale, viewers finally learn who The Stranger actually is--and it's someone fans had theorized. In the episode, The Stranger meets up with Tom Bombadil in his hut, where Bombadil says to him: "A wizard does not find his staff, it finds him, like his name." The Stranger says in reply, "Gandalf, that's what they're going to call me, isn't it?"

And that's that. After years of fan theories and speculation that pointed to The Stranger being Gandalf, it's finally confirmed, and it'll be interesting to see where the show goes from here.

Hands-On The First Berserker: Khazan

3 Octubre 2024 at 13:00
It’s hard to separate The First Berserker: Khazan from its clear Sekiro inspiration. The beta saw a necessity to memorize the rhythms of boss and elite enemy attacks as players deflected their blows, all while managing a stamina gauge. There was simply no separating Khazan from Sekiro.

Documentary Shows Stalker 2 Is "An Element Of Resistance" Amid Russian Invasion Of Ukraine

3 Octubre 2024 at 13:00

When Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, it threw the entire country into chaos. Missiles fell on Ukrainian cities and Russian soldiers pushed over its borders. For developers at Ukrainian developer GSC Game World, it was a harrowing time--they had to decide whether to flee the fighting and the country or stay behind to help and even to fight.

Documentary War Game: The Making of Stalker 2 covers the development of Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl before and during the Russian invasion, bringing life to an often deeply emotional and frightening tale of what the studio's 300 employees faced. As developers worked to complete a game about which many felt deeply passionate--2008's Stalker: Shadow of Chornobyl is notable for its commercial and critical success, as well as the fact that it's a proudly Ukrainian game--they found themselves facing increasing tensions as the tensions between Russia and Ukraine heated up in 2022.

What's most notable about the 90-minute documentary is its look at the incredible, often heroic actions of the people at GSC Game World. As the situation grew more worrisome, GSC executive producer Mariia Grygorovich convinced her husband, CEO Ievgen Grygorovich, that the studio needed to make sure it could get its staff and their families out of Kiev, where the studio was based. Under Mariia's direction, GSC commissioned buses that were ready 24 hours a day to take developers hours west, toward Ukraine's borders with NATO states.

Bananas, Not Video Games, Are Likely To Be Impacted By Dockworker Strike

3 Octubre 2024 at 12:20

For the first time since 1977, dockworkers at ports from Maine to Texas are on strike for higher wages and better working conditions, prompting fears of product shortages. But will the strike, which covers 45,000+ dockworkers at 36 ports on the US East and Gulf coasts, impact video games?

The short answer: probably not, at least not in the short term. Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter tells GameSpot that nearly every major product manufactured in Asia comes into the US through ports on the West coast. Video game consoles like PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch devices are manufactured in China and are known to come into the US through ports on the West coast. As such, the impact of the strike on video game console availability may be limited.

The availability of video game consoles was constrained during the pandemic due in part to global semiconductor shortages and supply chain challenges. These issues impacted Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, along with a number of other video game companies.

Star Citizen Dev Is Forcing Employees To Work Seven Days A Week - Report

3 Octubre 2024 at 12:10

For a game that's still technically in pre-release early access, Star Citizen has amassed a large following and its own annual convention, CitizenCon. But even though the full release isn't on the horizon, Star Citizen's developer, Cloud Imperium Games, is reportedly forcing its employees to work seven days a week through CitizenCon.

Insider Gaming shared excerpts from an apparent internal email at Cloud Imperium Games that in no uncertain terms tells its employees that they have to work every day leading up to CitizenCon, even through the two weekends beforehand. Work from home will only be an option on the Sunday before CitizenCon, although Cloud Imperium Games noted its preference for employees to come in that day as well.

The stated goals of this crunch time are to finish Star Citizen patch 3.24.2 and "the Squadron 42 demo showcase for Chapter 1." The report also notes that employees were pre-approved for 12 hours of TOIL (time off in lieu) per week, but only if the workers are still employed by Cloud Imperium Games when Squadron 42 ships. If any employees leave ahead of time, they will not be able to take their accumulated TOIL.

Shigeru Miyamoto Isn't Credited On Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom, A First For The Series

3 Octubre 2024 at 12:06

Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto has slowly withdrawn from active game development as the years go by, but The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom may mark a major step in that journey as the first Zelda game without his name in the credits.

As picked up by Go Nintendo, Miyamoto isn't mentioned anywhere in the credits of Echoes of Wisdom, marking a first across 19 mainline Zelda games from 1986 to last year's Tears of the Kingdom.

Miyamoto has been involved with the Zelda franchise since its inception, but the 71-year-old has slowly stepped away from development over the years to work on some of Nintendo's non-game-related projects. As far back as 2011, Miyamoto said he liked to remove himself from development a little so the studio's younger developers would step up their involvement.

Brutal Game Layoffs Continue With Smite Developer Hi-Rez

3 Octubre 2024 at 12:01

The ongoing wave of layoffs in the video game industry continues with Hi-Rez Studios, the developer of the Smite games, announcing it will be letting go of an unspecified number of employees. The layoffs come shortly after Hi-Rez released MOBA sequel Smite 2 in paid early access.

Via PC Gamer, Hi-Rez hasn't specified how many people will be impacted by the layoffs, but said that they will affect all parts of the company. "This will disproportionately impact those in marketing and publishing roles, as well as some from our Evil Mojo, G&A, and Titan Forge divisions," Hi-Rez CEO Stewart Chisam said on X. Only small teams will be left to support Smite and Paladins, while the company shifts its major focus to Smite 2.

"The game team roles impacted disproportionally affect our team working on cosmetic skin content and system features." Chisam said, adding that development on Smite 2 will focus on gameplay over new cosmetics. "We are almost exclusively prioritizing gameplay development in the near term--such as new modes and gods--as well as quality improvements--over some cosmetic and monetization features previously planned in the run-up to the game's free-to-play launch next year."

Animal Crossing Lego sets are on sale for their lowest prices yet at Amazon and Walmart ahead of Prime Big Deal Days. Lego launched the series of playsets earlier this year with five different building kits. Two more sets released in August, and the lineup will hit double digits in January when three new playsets launch alongside the first Mario Kart Lego sets. Animal Crossing Lego Sets at Amazon

Animal Crossing Lego Sets at Walmart

Nook's Cranny and Rosie's House set was the biggest set in the lineup (and most expensive) before being surpassed by five bucks and 15 pieces by K.K. Slider. It usually retails for $75, but the 20% discount right now brings the price down to $60. The Nook's Cranny and Rosie's House set contains 535 pieces to construct both buildings, and includes Lego versions of both Animal Crossing characters, Tom Nook and Rosie.

If you're interested in K.K.'s Concert in the Plaza, you may need to click "Other sellers on Amazon" to get the discount. Amazon's page has been switching back and forth between listings for the full $80 and the best deal, which lets you get the recently released playset for $71. Note that K.K.'s Concert in the Plaza is sold out directly from Amazon (and Walmart), so you will need to pick a listing that is sold by a third-party but still shipped by Amazon. Even though it's technically sold by a third party, you can get Prime shipping and are eligible for Amazon's normal return policy and customer service.

October Is Thankfully Stacked With New Horror Games

2 Octubre 2024 at 20:35

Halloween has stretched to become a month-long celebration for many people, with many seeking to play new horror games, discover the best horror movies, and eat pumpkin-flavored treats. We already have a list of the best horror games to play in 2024, and it's loaded with a few-dozen timeless classics, newer hits, and everything in between. But if you're like me, and your horror backlog is painfully short because you're all caught up on the genre, don't worry. October 2024 is going to be a good, busy month for new horror games. We've rounded up all the major releases you can expect in the genre this month, which is a scarier sibling gallery to our broader list of October 2024 new video game releases in general.

The horror games you see below are listed in order of release date, so if you're really diligent, you can keep up day by day, week by week. If you're in need of even more horror content, don't miss the best horror games on Game Pass and the best zombie games. On the movie side, we have a list of the best vampire movies, the best movies set on Halloween, and a list of horror movies that, for some reason, went to outer space. If you don't mind Scream spoilers, we've even ranked every Ghostface.

Moving Houses - October 1

Platforms: PC

Don't let the cheerful imagery fool you. Moving Houses may look like a happy home redecorator sim, but it hides a much more somber side to it that comes to the surface the deeper you go. That twist is both teased in trailers and alluded to in the developer's tweets, so we're comfortable saying it here. Plus, we find such a rug-pull to be especially effective in the horror genre. If you agree, this one is out on Steam now with positive reviews.

Predator: Hunting Grounds - October 1

Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5

Illfonic is no stranger to licensed horror and horror-adjacent games, having previously worked on other games like Friday The 13th, Ghostbusters, and Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Predator predates all of those, and it's recently been given renewed life on modern consoles. The 4v1 multiplayer game casts the titular hunter extraordinaire against a pack of soldiers meant to kill the being. How that turns out is up to you and your friends.

Until Dawn - October 4

Platforms: PC, PS5

The re-release of Supermassive's best cinematic horror story is being labeled a remake despite seeming to be more like a remaster, but whatever you call it, it should make for a great Halloween-season game whether you've played it before or not. These choose-your-own-adventure style games are great in small groups where different players can be assigned caretaking duties for different characters. Can you get your ward out of this story alive?

Silent Hill 2 Remake - October 8

Platforms: PC, PS5

Perhaps the biggest game on this list, Silent Hill 2 follows a run of horror remakes like Resident Evil 2, 3, 4, and Dead Space, that have set a high bar, and the world is waiting to see if Bloober Team can keep the winning streak alive. It'll be no easy feat, as the original game is often considered among the best in the genre's storied history, but with some of the original team assisting on the project, we remain hopeful.

Amanda The Adventurer (Xbox and PlayStation Launch) - October 10

Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PS5, Xbox One, PS4

PC and Switch gamers may have already experienced the unique horrors of this twisted take on a children's TV show, but if you're waiting to play it on other platforms, your wait is almost over. The game blends bits of first-person exploration and puzzle-solving with point-and-click mechanics when you're inside the titular learning program. Think of it as Dora The Explorer… only with murder.

DayZ Frostline Expansion - October 15

Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5

DayZ is expanding again; this time it's getting chillier with the winter-themed map, Sakhal, an archipelago that succumbed to the same zombie plague that the rest of the DayZ universe has suffered. The winner-takes-all ruthlessness of DayZ seems well-suited for a snowy region where keeping warm is likely to be a greater concern. Bundle up!

A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead - October 17

Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5

There hasn't been much talk of this one despite it being just a few weeks out at the time of writing this, but if you like the movies, this first-person shush-or-die horror game could be a fun companion piece, offering a new storyline featuring new characters not seen in the movies.

RetroRealms Halloween and Ash vs. Evil Dead - October 18

Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5, Xbox One, PS4, Switch

Boss Team Games is teaming with WayForward, one of the best 2D game developers going right now, for this unexpected series of horror platformers. Halloween and Ash vs. Evil Dead are the first two of at least four IP to be represented in this horror museum of a sort, with the next two still to be revealed. If these first entries do well commercially, Boss Team has plans to continue bringing in more iconic horror characters, leading perhaps to an eventual Scary Smash Bros. vibe.

No More Room In Hell 2 - October 22

Platforms: PC

Left 4 Dead-likes are bountiful, especially on PC, but this sequel to a somewhat under-heralded game inspired by L4D ups the ante in a few ways. For one, if it's like the original, it's much harder than typical Left 4 Dead. It's also played in eight-player co-op rather than four, which seems to reinforce that earlier claim about difficulty. If I need seven allies to fend off zombies, things seem to have really gotten out of hand.

Forest Hills: The Last Year

Platforms: PC

The next asymmetrical horror PvP game is on the way. Forest Hills: The Last Year is sort of a reboot of an arguably cursed game that first launched exclusively in the short-lived Discord games store, before later being moved to Steam after its momentum had vanished. Now, rebuilt in a new engine with a team that feels it's ready to bring the game into the limelight of a competitive genre, the third time may be the charm.

The Axis Unseen - October 22

Platforms: PC

Developed by a former Bethesda dev, The Axis Unseen is a first-person survival-horror and hunting game in which you track and kill strange mythical beasts. It's also inspired by the heavy metal genre, and it seems like there's a lot of overlap between the horror and metal fandoms, so this one is sure to become some people's whole personality for a while after it launches.

Post Trauma - October 29

Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5, Xbox One, PS4

Post Trauma is an interesting blend of old and new ideas from the horror genre. Its gameplay is presented by way of fixed camera angles akin to classic PS1 and PS2 horror games, but its visuals reject the popular retro aesthetic in favor of a high-fidelity modern look. Like a lot of games of this sort, success will ultimately come down to how scary it is and how rewarding its exploration feels, but a new game going for that classic approach with a fresh coat of paint is an intriguing starting point.

Clock Tower Rewind - October 29

Platforms: PS5, PS4, Switch, Mobile

The Clock Tower series has been dormant for a long time, but now its return will be marked with a reset, in a sense. Clock Tower Rewind is a re-release and somewhat modernized version of the very first game in the series. The 2D horror game predates basically every other horror series you may know by name, so even if the 2D style isn't your thing, there's a historical case for checking this one out.

Alan Wake 2 - The Lake House Expansion - October TBD

Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5

Nearly a year to the day since the game launched, Alan Wake 2's second (and presumed final) expansion is coming this month, though no release date has yet been specifically circled on the calendar. In The Lake House, it seems players will take on the role of yet another new playable protagonist, with Special Agent Estevez filling that role after the base game and first expansion combined for five playable characters. For Remedy Connected Universe devotees, expect this to be another must-play chapter with as many questions as it has answers.
