Update 9: Opensource sonos alternative on vintage speakers, based on raspberry pi

Update 9: Opensource sonos alternative on vintage speakers, based on raspberry pi

Sunday! Docker compose is working and apple accepted the controller for testflight (appStore).

For those who have no idea what i’m talking about : I’m trying to build an open source sonos alternative, mainly software (based on snapcast), currently focusing on hardware (based on pi). I’m summarizing it here: r/beatnikAudio

Beatnik Controller: The Controller can no be installed using docker compose. I added the instructions. to the repo: https://github.com/byrdsandbytes/beatnik-controller I also pushed the compiled iOS app to the appStore. (Screenshots of the tab pages)

Hardware: I’m mainly working on joins, screws, pcb holders and dial parts. Struggeling. Joins everywhere. My case design is stupid and I have to start over. But i got some cool parts from a watchmaker.

This week’s Diagramm is about upcycling and repairing stuff. Because planned obsolescence sucks.

Thanks for the suggestions, feedback and support. Grindy phase, but still enjoying it. 🎈

📚 My Calibre Web Companion App is now available on the Play Store!

Hey there! 👋

I just wanted to announce that my Calibre Web Companion app is now available on the Google Play Store.

You can download the app here. You can also check out the repo.

In the coming weeks, I will try to finally implement the ability to connect to a Calibre web instance that is behind an authentication service (e.g., Authelia).

I would appreciate some feedback and a nice review on the Play Store. :)

Proxmox "no subscription no nag" solution upgraded for PVE 8.4.2+, PBS 3.4.3+

Proxmox "no subscription no nag" solution upgraded for PVE 8.4.2+, PBS 3.4.3+

Proxmox updated their entire codebase before a major release to their no-subscription userbase with virtually all sources auto-reformatted.

PVE and PBS updated beyond the listed versions will break the "no-nag" feature - no ill side-effects, patches not applicable anymore gracefully failing.

Update your tool with another manual install - same as the original new install.

NOTE: Not applicable to PMG as of now.

Speakr Update: New Sharing System + Enhanced Mobile Recording

Speakr Update: New Sharing System + Enhanced Mobile Recording

Hey r/selfhosted! Just released a major update to Speakr - my self-hosted audio transcription and perhaps now note-taking app.

What's New:

  • Secure sharing system - share transcriptions publicly with permission settings (include/exclude summaries, revoke access, manage links)
  • Mobile recording - Better system audio capture with dual visualizers for mic + system audio
  • AMR file support - for mobile devices and voice recorders
  • Real-time notepad - take notes while recording with markdown editor
  • Configurable logging - Better debugging with LOG_LEVEL env var
  • "Black Hole" auto-processing - drop files in a folder and they will auto-process

Perfect for:

  • Meeting notes with speaker identification (diarization)
  • Mobile recording on-the-go
  • Batch processing audio files
  • Secure sharing of transcriptions

Hardware Note: Basic transcription works great with Whisper API endpoints or CPU-only Whisper. For advanced speaker diarization and ASR capabilities, a GPU is recommended for best results.

Tech Stack: Flask + Vue.js, Docker deployment, OpenAI/local API support

Iso v1.0.0 - Now with Themes, Auth, and a Visual Editor

Iso v1.0.0 - Now with Themes, Auth, and a Visual Editor

Iso is a self-hosted dashboard with a minimalistic design, geared toward non-technical users like friends and family.

Check out:

Hello everyone!
This past week, I've quietly been working on the first official release of Iso.

What started as a simple one-page dashboard now includes:

  • A fully featured config editor
  • Authentication
  • Themes
  • Visual sorting of services
  • A bunch of included isometric icons

Please let me know of any feedback you have. Bugs reports, ideas, and feature requests are welcome!

Finally, I also want to thank everyone who reached out via DM with kind words and encouragement after my first post about Iso.
While I did receive a fair amount of criticism for both my wording and my tech stack (Next.js), I’ve done my best to make this post as clear as possible. And although switching to plain JS, HTML, and CSS, like many suggested, isn't really possible at this point, I still believe Iso is a project worth sharing.

Thanks, Tim

Best Hardware

I was trying to build my own home server to use apps like Immich, what's the cheapest hardware I realistically will need? I already got hard disk to store files. I don't mind buying used or to buy from aliexpress. Thanks!

PS: I'm from Italy, idk if that makes a difference maybe

How to host OpenVPN Server on Android Device without Root?

I want to set up a VPN server on my old Android device so I can connect to my home Wi-Fi when I'm away. Is there a way to do this on an Android device without rooting it? Or is there an application that can help me achieve this?

Introducing MultiNotify – A Self‑Hosted Reddit Notification Bot

I’ve been working on MultiNotify, a lightweight, open-source bot designed to monitor Reddit and send automated notifications to multiple platforms—including Discord (webhooks and DMs), Slack, and Mattermost. It’s built to run entirely in Docker so anyone can spin it up quickly.

What it does:

Monitors specific subreddits for new posts.

Filters by flair (e.g., only “News” or “Discussion” posts).(Or no flairs at all--sends all posts)

Sends notifications via:

Discord Webhooks (post to channels)

Discord Direct Messages (optional, toggleable)

Slack and Mattermost channels.

Fully configurable through:

The .env file, or

Discord commands (so you can change settings without touching the files).

Why I built it

Most Reddit-to-Discord bots are either closed-source, or don’t support DMs and multiple platforms out of the box. I wanted a simple, self-hosted, Dockerized solution that’s easy to deploy and customize.

Looking for testers!

I’d love help with:

Testing across Discord (webhooks + DMs), Slack, and Mattermost.

Checking performance with multiple subreddits and flair filters.

Feedback on the Discord command system—is it intuitive enough?

Suggestions for future features (keyword filters, richer embeds, support for more platforms, etc.).

I do plan on adding support for more sources such as x, various news, etc.

Repo: https://github.com/ethanocurtis/MultiNotify Feedback, issues, and PR's all welcome!

Is my setup secure enough? (New to self-hosting)

Hey everyone,

I've just started my r/selfhosted journey and wanted to check in to make sure I'm doing things securely... Especially since I’ll be storing sensitive documents in Paperless NGX.

Right now, I’ve got an Ubuntu machine running Paperless, and I’ve set up a private ZeroTier network with all my devices connected to it. Everything’s running over HTTP, since (as I understand it) ZeroTier handles end-to-end encryption.

The Ubuntu box is protected with a root password and full disk encryption (LUKS), and I’m doing daily backups with rclone to OneDrive. I know that’s not 100% in the spirit of self-hosting, but I don’t mind using a cloud provider as long as I still have control over my data. I’m also planning to do a monthly physical backup to an external HDD.

Just wondering if anyone has tips, best practices, or potential red flags I should be aware of to keep things secure. Having these documents leak publicly would be a complete nightmare, so I’d really appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

You can use your old android phone as Debian (home) server

You can use your old android phone as Debian (home) server

Kali Linux NetHunter was originally created for penetration testing on your Android device. It does not run native, but instead a custom Android ROM overlay with a Kali Linux environment. This still means you can install any package that supports your phone's architecture (in my case, it's ARM64). It also uses all of your phone's resources (see image below).

https://preview.redd.it/iah7oohrkudf1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=90ae7153892c0c4e6ec419e5b7401441d35dbcfd

Comparing the statistics with those of the Raspberry Pi 4, the Samsung S9 has 8 cores up to 2.704 GHz, while the Pi 4 is limited to 4 cores at 1.5 GHz. Overall, it is about 3x faster. Unfortunately, my Samsung S9 is limited to 4GB of ram, but newer phones like the Samsung Galaxy S10 use 8GB of ram. Even better if you have one laying around.

Power consumption is also low. There are no statistics for the S9, but if you do a simple search for a phone that runs 24/7 on heavy CPU load and highest brightness, it consumes less than ~50kwh per year, which totals to about €15 per year.

The image above is my connection to Kali via a VNC client. The phone itself is still running Android like a normal phone in the background. In my case, I use the Debian to run a Telegram bot. But you can go even further by hosting a website without opening a port in your router by using Cloudflare Tunnel.

The best part is that if your phone disconnects, it means the server is still active. I tested it and left my phone uncharged all night and when I woke up, there was still 30% left. All in all, I just wanted to share my experience and the surprises I encountered when running Debian on an Android phone. My Raspberry Pi died so this was a necessary alternative for me. If you don't want to spend anything on a VPS, or are in the same situation as me, but still have an old android phone lying around, try it. You don't even need root.

I wrote this after beginning my foray into setting up my own home server - thought it might help others.

I am just beginning building up my own HomeLab and I just wanted to share my experience installing OpenMediaVault on aa Qnap NAS I have bought for this purpose. Since I already documented every step I took doing this and the work was half done, I said why not write an article and post it online Installing OpenMediaVault with ZFS . I am looking forward writting more articles since I am so excited about this subject. I plan to write about using Docker functionality of OMV to install an app on the server and how I will make my network available to me while away from home using a VPN like WireGuard. Hope this guide will prove helpful and since I am a newbie at all this self-hosting and even writting articles online, I appreciate any feedback. Cheers!

Upgrading J4105 to N305 or i5-13400

I have had my current server with a J4105 for 6 years or so, most recently running Proxmox. I have lately been investing some more time adding Home Assistant, *arr suite, Jellyfin, OMV and a few other services and have started noticing slowdowns.

I was initially looking at a N100 based motherboard, while probably fine I want this to last a good 5 years (or more), which lead me to the N305. I found the CWWK purple board which has some positive feedback. However, it's not the cheapest setup at around 275euro, which got me thinking, what else can I put together for this price, some research later I have come up with the following options:

  1. CWWK i3 N305 (€275) + 1TB Western Digital Green SN350 (€55) + Crucial DDR5 SODIMM 1x32GB 4800 (€90) ~ €420
  2. Intel Core i5-13400 (€130) + ASUS PRIME H610I-PLUS D4-CSM (€120) + 1TB Western Digital Green SN350 (€55 ish) + Crucial DDR4 PRO 2x16GB 3200 (€85 ish) (I could re-use the 1x32gb from my J4105) ~ €390

While power consumption might be a little higher, I've come across some threads suggesting I can get it down to similar levels as the J4105 (12-17w idle).

I already have two 10tb drives I will move over, in al likelihood next year will probably see two more added at which point I'm out of room in my Node 304 (which is fine).

In the future I would like to also add a few other services such as Immich, Frigate (with Google Coral and HA OS when we have cameras), Nextcloud, Opensense, Pi-Hole.

The i5 is a cheaper option, which seems to make more sense as it will be more future proof, but also probably overkill. While the 305 is likely fine and lower power consumption, it also has two NIC which could be a benfit later when I get around to setting up OpnSense/Pi-Hole. Which make the most sense?

Synology VPN Server randomly stops working — TLS handshake fails until reboot

I'm running VPN Server on my Synology DS918+ with DSM 7.2.1-69057 Update 7 (using OpenVPN). For the most part, it works fine — I can connect from multiple devices without any issues.

However, every couple of months, the VPN suddenly stops accepting connections. Nothing has changed in the configuration, and the NAS has not been rebooted or updated. From the client side, I just start getting repeated TLS handshake timeouts. The logs show:

TLS Error: TLS key negotiation failed to occur within 60 seconds (check your network connectivity) TLS Error: TLS handshake failed SIGUSR1[soft,tls-error] received, process restarting

In the VPN connection list on the NAS, I can see my client IP and the username shows up as UNDEF.

This happens across multiple clients and networks, so I'm confident the issue is not on the client side — it appears to be the VPN Server itself. The only way to get it working again is to reboot the entire NAS. Restarting the VPN Server package from the DSM interface doesn't fix it. Even manually killing all openvpn processes via SSH and restarting the package doesn't always resolve it. This seems like a process or state issue inside Synology's VPN implementation.

Has anyone else seen this kind of behavior with VPN Server? Is there a permanent fix or at least a reliable workaround that doesn't involve rebooting the NAS? I'd prefer to keep using Synology’s built-in VPN Server if possible, but this instability is frustrating.

Looking for affordable upgrade ideas to run bigger LLMs locally (current setup with 2 laptops & Proxmox)

Hey everyone,
I’m currently running a small home lab setup with 2 laptops running Proxmox, and I’m looking to expand it a bit to be able to run larger LLMs locally (ideally 7B+ models) without breaking the bank.

Current setup:

  • Laptop 1:
    • Proxmox host
    • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Max-Q (8GB VRAM)
    • Running Ollama with Qwen2:3B and other smaller models
  • Laptop 2:
    • Proxmox host
    • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M
    • Hosting lightweight websites and Forgejo

I’d like to be able to run larger models (like 7B or maybe even 13B, ideally with quantization) for local experimentation, inferencing, and fine-tuning. I know 8GB VRAM is quite limiting, especially for anything beyond 4B without heavy quantization.

Looking for advice on:

  • What should I add to my setup to run bigger models (ideally consumer GPU or budget server options)?
  • Is there a good price/performance point in used enterprise hardware for this purpose?

Budget isn’t fixed, but I’d prefer suggestions in the affordable hobbyist range rather than $1K+ setups.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Proxmox - HDD going into sleep like state?

Hello hosters, got a weird one that seems to be above my wheel house.

I run a proxmox host with 3, Identical 14Tb drives.
(link the drives I bought https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08T3PBV57?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title )

One of the drives seems to enter a sleep like state randomly. (this has occurred twice in the past 3 weeks now)

This next part will probably make you cringe, butttttt when I physically lift the drive, it suddenly comes back to life and everything works as it should.

Any ideas on what it might be?

Beginner in Proxmox

Hi All,

I’m new in proxmox, installed it few days ago and now I will start my journey in virtualisation. I have a problem while creating a new VM. I chose the ISO in alpineiso.org (raspbianOS) but when I started the VM in console I receive the message “no bootable iso” and vm restart in loop.

Someone could help me?

Looking for simple self-hosted inventory management software with barcode scanning (preferably file-based, no DB if possible)

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a self-hosted inventory management solution that I can run on my NAS, ideally via Docker. The main goal is simplicity and reliability:

Preferably file-based storage (no database), but I’m open to database solutions if they are easy to back up and restore.

Backup and restore should be straightforward with minimal downtime.

The system must handle barcode scanning via mobile app or web interface using a phone camera.

After scanning, metadata and photos should be automatically added or easy to attach.

It’s crucial that if data corruption happens, recovery is easy and I won’t lose track of important items.

I want a minimal “small server” setup, no complex administration or command-line fiddling.

Does anyone know of software that fits this description? Thanks in advance!
