Anteayer3d-printing

"Wow you have a 3d printer, so what are you going to sell? "I don't want to sell anything","Well I'm sure you'll come up with a side hustle"

Is this a conversation that often comes up? I got a 3d printer at the end of last year, and whenever it comes up, they are shocked I haven't opened an online store. My arguments except for "this is a fun hobby not a side hustle for me" is that

  1. 3d printing is easier as ever, so I would compete way more people like me
  2. 3d printing has been a thing for a while, so I would compete with more established people
  3. stl files are easy to find , so anyone (especially those who don't care about commercial license) can just grab a file and send it
  4. Price is depressed due to how many people are flooding the market

My only thought of even thinking about doing this, is if I designed my own files and sell those files instead (Selling shovels in a gold rush) rather than actually printing them. Maybe selling my own designs.

However, how feasible is it to start a 3d printing business?

Am I wrong in this? If I can just pick up a printer download some stl files and printing, doesn't that mean that anyone and everyone can do this and the barrier to entry is low? And because of that it's harder to stand out and margins are low.
