Red Barrels, the development studio behind the Outlast series, has suffered a major cyber attack.

In a statement on its website, the developer Red Barrels confirms its "internal IT systems" were hacked, "involving access to some of its data". Having completed an investigation of the situation, the team confirms that players of its games are unaffected by the data breach.

Time to Oct in.

Today, 3rd October 2024, Sony has set live pre-orders for numerous upcoming items in the realm of PlayStation. It's clear the platform holder is targeting a big PS5 push this holiday season, with new accessory colours and first-party games inbound — and all up for advance purchase right now.

First, there's the Chroma Collection. This is a series of new, iridescent colour schemes for PS5 accessories; you can get PS5 cover plates and DualSense controllers in attractive Chroma Indigo, Chroma Pearl, and Chroma Teal. The former two come out on 7th November, while the latter launches 23rd January.

Wooly or won't he.

The indie horror scene on PC is always throwing out breakout hits, and a lot of them wind up on consoles. The latest of these is Amanda the Adventurer, which comes to PS5 and PS4 on 10th October, 2024.

The game is a mystery at its core; you discover a bunch of video tapes in an attic, each playing episodes of the titular kid's TV show. While it's presented as a saccharine educational program, things take an unsettling turn as you learn more about Amanda the Adventurer.

A matter of perspective.

Konami is currently developing Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, a remake of the beloved PS2 stealth action title. While many aspects are true to the original, players can opt for a modern, over-the-shoulder camera — but doing so will affect the level of challenge.

Speaking to Famitsu, Yuji Korekado explains that the remake has two options for camera perspective. 'New Style' puts the game in that modern third-person view we're all accustomed to, while the 'Legacy Style' retains the original game's more zoomed out approach.

What's the plan, Mistah J?

While very different games, Concord recently launched to a dismal response from players, and Sony pulled the plug after just two weeks. With the onset of Suicide Squad's Season 3 of live service content, nearly nine months out from launch, Warner Bros must be looking at the player count that killed Concord with some envy. Despite losing some $200 million and counting, it continues to endure.

Eurogamer has been keeping tabs on Rocksteady's unfortunate departure from its previous, excellent Arkham series. With the pivot to a live service structure clearly not going as planned, at least on PC (where such things are painfully exposed), Season 3 drew in less than 300 concurrent players at launch, down from an all-time peak of 13k back in February. Granted, it's not the weekend yet, but to that we say, why not wait a couple of days?

Better together.

Over-the-top amphibian shooter AK-xolotl is getting a free update today for players on PS5 and PS4, adding the essential local co-op update. We've come to expect this as traditional for indies featuring aggressive animals, following in Cult of the Lamb's footsteps, and certainly can't complain.

It features all-new enemies, weapons, systems, bosses, environments, and of course, co-op play. If you missed this one previously, its a good bit of fast and frenetic fun. A top-down roguelike shooter in the tradition of Enter the Gungeon, an arsenal of ridiculous weaponry keeps the fun unpredictable and fresh. In theory, that should go doubly so with twice as many players.

Good news for some.

Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney says the firm is now "financially sound" following a tumultuous year which, announced last September, involved the company shedding some 830 to 870 staff. That's despite the Fortnite and Unreal Engine developer making billions in revenue in the interim, which is estimated to grow an additional 30% over the next year. Sweeney made the remarks yesterday at Unreal Fest 2024, as relayed by GamesIndustry.biz.

In addition, Sweeney revealed that Fortnite managed a new peak milestone over the holidays, reaching a frankly astonishing 110 million monthly active users. Released in 2018, the undeniably enduring game managed to pull almost 45 million players in a single day with Fortnite OG.

Sci-fi survival game The Alters from developers 11 Bit Studios has been hit with a delay and is now expected to launch sometime in early 2025. In a refreshing statement, president Przemysław Marszał said that "after so many years of production, the risk that the game will have any shortcomings is unnecessary for us."

Marszał made the remarks to Polish finance publication bankier.pl (thanks, IGN), explaining: "The production schedule for The Alters was very tight. There was uncertainty as to whether the developers would have enough time to complete all the work to meet the quality we all expected."

Ubisoft is having a tough week.

With a second exclusive report out of the embattled Ubisoft development team this week, outlet Insider Gaming is living up to its reputation. A cooperative game mode is reportedly in the works for Assassin's Creed Shadows, in development long before the game's recent, lengthy delay was announced.

That's according to Tom Henderson's sources, who report that the mode (codenamed LEAGUE) does not have a release date and was previously planned as a post-launch update. Specifics are quite scarce, but presumably, the mode would allow the game's protagonists, shinobi Naoe and samurai Yasuke, to battle together in Shadows' open world. Insider reminds us just how all-in on Assassin's Creed the French publisher is going, with a secretive multiplayer entry in the series creeping up on a 2025 release date, the apparently Fall Guys-esque Assassin's Creed Invictus.

Beat Saber, the popular PSVR and PSVR2 rhythm game, is set to receive another licensed song pack, and this time it focuses on one of music's biggest pop stars, Britney Spears. It's set for release on 8th October.

Precisely which of her tracks will be included has yet to be announced, but the teaser trailer does confirm Gimme More will be among them.

Famitsu weighs in on upcoming PS5 games.

Two of October's biggest game releases have just received their very first reviews, and they of course come courtesy of Japanese magazine, Famitsu.

First up, Atlus' much-anticipated fantasy RPG, Metaphor: ReFantazio, earns itself a 37/40, with the panel of four awarding three 9s and a 10. Meanwhile, the Silent Hill 2 remake, developed by Bloober Team, also earns itself a high rating of 35/40 (three 9s and an 8).

One of Sony's big holiday games is LEGO Horizon Adventures, a more family-friendly take on Guerrilla Games' epic series. One of the main highlights of Aloy's ongoing quest is the range of robotic enemies she faces, and they look brilliant in their plastic incarnations.

Guerrilla has shared a few shots of some of the machines you'll encounter in the action platformer, and while the LEGO Tallneck is a real thing, these images are leaving us wanting a full range of Horizon sets to build:

Looking back.

Crow Country, the PS1-inspired horror adventure game, is coming to PS4. It's been available on PS5 since May, and on 16th October, those with Sony's last-gen console will be able to join the creepy fun.

The game takes heavy inspiration from old school survival horror games such as Resident Evil, with its gritty aesthetic harkening back to pre-rendered backdrops from the PS1 days. This retro vibe combined with some modern design results in a great horror title, and perfect for getting into the Halloween spirit.

Another one of gaming's print magazines is shutting up shop. PLAY, Future Publishing's PlayStation magazine, has announced the latest issue will be its last.

Issue #46 features Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater on the cover with a hands-on preview, plus info on PS5 Pro, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, Ghost of Yotei, and plenty more. It goes on sale later this month, and then that'll be the end of it.

Only a few things in life are guaranteed: death, taxes, and Call of Duty's endless popularity. However, you should never bet against anime, either — and it seems the weebs are coming out in force to support Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero on PS5.

The next entry in the Budokai Tenkaichi series in all but name, Sparking! Zero is a hotly anticipated brawler that lets you play as hundreds of characters and blast away opponents with explosive attacks. It's set for release this October.

Wants to address "pain points".

A blog post on Microsoft's game developer website has highlighted the firm's intention to learn why Xbox is being skipped over in favour of other platforms.

It's no big secret that certain developers have faced struggles with the Xbox ecosystem in recent times. The biggest example is Baldur's Gate 3, which was delayed on Xbox because of the Series S console's inability to competently run the game in split-screen mode.
