- Why I think AI generated 3D models are bad for the 3D printing community
Why I think AI generated 3D models are bad for the 3D printing community
I am not against AI. But I think AI generated models are bad for the 3D printing community. Most AI models I have seen are just poorly designed and not suitable for 3D printing.
- They frequently have areas that need supports all over, also in hard to reach spaces where supports would be very hard to remove.
- They frequently have parts of the print that are too thin which will cause the print to break mid print, or afterwards.
- The people who make these AI models rarely print the model, but instead use renders that make it look amazing. Then when you look at the makes they look way worse.
- A lot of times the AI models have many likes because people look at the render and think it looks good.
- The renders sometimes have colours in them even though the model isn't made for multicoloured printing.
- Sometimes they get basics wrong. Like having a rough surface as the first layer on the bottom, or saying "no supports needed" when supports are needed. It is normal to find extremely complex AI models with the description saying that is is an easy print.
- People keep on lying about using AI. Almost nobody writes in the description that a model is AI generated. Why not be open about it?
- People claim ownership of AI generated models. In both the EU and the US, AI generated things are not copyrightable. Seeing an AI model labeled as not allowing remixes or commercial use is legally nonsensical and kind of arrogant in my opinion.
I personally know enough to see what is hard to print and what is impractical. But people who are new to the hobby don't. I'm just imagining a newbie buying a 3D printer and seeing awesome cool models, only print them and fail or get a result that looks nothing like the render. I feel sad for them.

Plant inspired Tic Tac Toe Game :)
![]() | Designed this cozy little game set for plant lovers (and print lovers)! Characters are two types of monstera leaves: Deliciosa vs Adansonii Printed in PLA with no supports and fun color combos. Perfect as shelf decor, a chill desk game, or a gift for the green-thumbed people in your life. Let me know which characters should I make next ;) [link] [comments] |

Rant discussion: if you’re going to post a remixable model, post the source file, not just the stl
Spent the past 5 hours in fusion making a modification to an imported stl from printables to make the model printable without supports because the amount of supports needed as designed is 2x the amount of filament needed for the model.
This would have taken 5 minutes to edit if the author would have uploaded the source file (STEP, F3D, SCAD, BLEND, etc) instead of just the faceted STL. So the rant is, if authors going to allow remixing in the license, they should be required to also upload the source.

![]() | Super happy with this, can't wait to upgrade it to make it really fast. Currently I have an elegoo Neptune 3 pro. The guy who sold it to me is the father of a classmate. He sold it to me because he kept having issues with it so he bought a new ender 3 V3 and wanted to get rid of his old one. [link] [comments] |

For the woman who is always losing their chapstick
![]() | I designed this for my wife who is constantly losing her chapstick. It's functional, but let's be honest. The moment she uses it once it will hang empty on the wall for years to come. Like a savage from 2020 I cut the acrylic by hand and the vinyl was cut on silhouette vinyl cutter. No real need to break the glass, everything is held together with 3mm magnets. - LED Infinity Mirror Pendant
LED Infinity Mirror Pendant
![]() | I designed this LED infinity mirror pendant to wear to a festival last year and was so happy with the results I wanted to share it with the world! It's bright but not too bright, and the effect is super fun -- like having a tunnel to nowhere through your chest. Lots of people wandered up to me like moths to a flame just to stare into my void 😅. Just finally got around to creating a tutorial and putting the 3D print files up for download. Does require 3D printing, some basic soldering and fabrication skills (mostly in cutting the acrylic triangles). Video Tutorial: https://youtu.be/ODap-VITBZ8?si=MQsyG8aDpMg6Y5_g 3D Print Files: https://abandaziandesign.etsy.com/listing/4307771393/void-triangle-infinity-mirror-led I haven't played around yet much but you can also create cool effects by putting other objects inside the mirror, e.g. a cool crystal or initials right in the center, as the reflections will also be refracted and multiplied. Enjoy, let me know what you think and if anybody builds one definitely let me know how it goes! [link] [comments] |

I designed a modular system for my bruxism detector
![]() | Hi everyone! I've been working on interrupting bruxism for the last couple of months. In the process I designed a simple but effective mounting system, basically you have one device (tracker) that can be easily hooked onto different modules and the modules in turn can be hooked onto other modules, forming a tower. You can have them lie flat on a surface together or individually, or be hooked to a wall, or stay attached to your belt. It all integrates with the app and software. It's one big system I am proud to share with you all. The printable modules are here: The modular system seems to do the job pretty much flawlessly. [link] [comments] |

A 3D printed foot pressure point board (Inspired by Japan)
![]() | I live in Japan and often see rock pressure point walking paths at public parks. (4th picture is my wife and daughter trying one out) Many people swear by the effectiveness of foot pressure point reflexology. Maybe you've heard of Japanese Shiatsu massage? I created a small 3D printed version. "Are 3D prints foot safe?" 😆 I was skeptical at first but it genuinely feels great and relieves stress and pain in your feet. I'm sharing because I've gotten lots of comments from people that they genuinely felt better after using it. I hope you can give it a try. I love functional prints, and one that can possibly help people makes me so happy. I have two versions and you can check them out here [link] [comments] |
