Industrial 3D Model in Progress—5-Hour FDM Print for Construction Display (PLA, UAE-Based Project)

This is a behind-the-scenes look at a recent industrial model we printed using PLA on an FDM printer. The full job took about 5 hours to complete and was designed specifically for a construction-sector project in the UAE.

We handle 3D printing for architectural models, automotive prototypes, and industrial displays using cost-efficient solutions. Whether you're curious about 3D printing prices in Dubai, or looking for low-cost 3D printing services that deliver quality – this is a good example of what’s possible with proper planning and optimized 3D modeling for printing.

🔧 Printer: Ender
🧵 Material: PLA
📍 Location: Dubai, UAE
🕒 Print Time: 5 Hours
📦 Use-Case: Construction industrial model
💼 Relevant for: 3D printing firms, architectural model makers, 3D print shops, 3D product designers

Happy to answer any questions about 3D printer printing cost, design preparation, or FDM vs resin for different types of models!

Problems encountered in 3D printing houses.

Problems encountered in 3D printing houses.

This 3D-printed house model was specially designed for a university graduation exhibition. Seeing it printed layer by layer was incredibly satisfying. To ensure better stability, it's safer to set the wall thickness to at least 1.2mm. I did run into some issues with the base layer not sticking properly during large-area prints, but lowering the print speed helped improve the situation.

Help with Design Process Research

28 Mayo 2025 at 16:50

Hi, I am a fellow maker and an engineering student, working on a project this summer, where I am conducting research on the hardware design process of makers.

It would be a great help to me and the maker community if you could fill out this survey and provide insight into your design process.

Additionally, as a thank you for your time, we are going to be giving away $25 Amazon gift cards to 15 respondents at random.

Thank you so much for your help, and let me know if you have any questions!

Final Adhesion Test

Final Adhesion Test

I did one last glue-on-tape PLA-adhesion R&D test. I made accurate serial dilutions of Lepage carpenter glue and applied the diluted glue solutions (with a small brush) to 1/8 sections of the printing plate (covered with tape).

The amounts of glue in 12ml water were: 0.0g, 0.1g, 0.2g, 0.5g, 1.0g, 2.0g, 3.0g, 4.0g.

For this particular glue, the 1part glue + 5parts water was the lowest dilution which significantly improved adhesion. Higher concentrations of glue had even better adhesion. I printed everything simultaneously on my FLSUN SR to avoid variability.

I tested silk PLA and it too adheres super well.

I also performed tests with the plate heat turned OFF, and the adhesion was still excellent (although a 1+4 dilution is probably safer).

Looking for Help Modifying a Ashtray Design

26 Mayo 2025 at 05:22

Tried doing it myself but didn’t get far..

I was trying to split the tray in half so the two parts screw together, with large-hole mesh (big enough for ash to fall through) to create a catchment area.

The spike would also be moved onto the mesh and shortened, although I can mess with that myself if needed.

Would really appreciate any help!

PLA Adhesion Glue Tests

26 Mayo 2025 at 02:41
PLA Adhesion Glue Tests

I did some PLA adhesion R&D.

I've been using green Cantech tape covered with Elmer Stick Glue to 100% guarantee PLA adhesion, and I thought it was the best. But the stick glue was a bit viscous to apply, so I tried diluting a chunk of stick glue in water (super difficult!) and it was a completed failure.

Then I tried diluting some Lepage carpenter glue (1part) in 50-50/Water-Alcohol (2parts), so the glue was 33% in the end. The alcohol suppressed foaming and beading. Then I applied this 33% Lepage glue onto the green Cantech tape with a soft 2cm brush.

This test was successful. The PLA adhesion was even better than with Elmer Stick glue, and it was MUCH easier to apply with a brush to get a perfectly smooth and matt layer. I did these tests using leftover PLA & my FLSUN SR.

I also tried adding the 30% Lepage glue directly on the print plate. It works well, but the dried glue can peel off if you scratch it.

I also tried using diluted Elmers liquid transparent glue, but it actually repelled the PLA, so this test failed.

The nice thing about using tape and glue is that after the first 10 layers, I can turn off the heat to the print plate and the PLA does not pop off.
