My homelab

4 Octubre 2024 at 09:06
My homelab

This is still a very early version; the plan is to nicely build a cabinet around it. The equipment includes a MikroTik, a Gen 10 micro server, and a Cisco switch. I use Proxmox and plan to configure a file server. Additionally, I’m preparing for the Red Hat certification and planning to set up another server to practice with High Availability (HA).

Poor Core 2 Duo U9400 is fighting for its life

Poor Core 2 Duo U9400 is fighting for its life

Running CasaOS with Immich, Jellyfin, Uptime Kuma and Crafty, all on 2 GB of ram, 9GB of swap, Debian 12.7.0 and thoughts and prayers

I had an old MacBook Air lying around (battery swollen, of course disposed of and not replaced). Decided to repurpose it, and get into homelab before I can get a proper PC

When do you find time to build your lab?

4 Octubre 2024 at 08:32

Between job and kids.. I never have time to make things the way I want them. Some examples include: - have only installed 1 out of 3 or 4 waps I already purchased - finally installed the drives in my nas but haven’t had time to set up shares - miraculously purchased a mini pc, and got proxmox up and running. Even had a k3s cluster running in there but my backups weren’t set up so I eventually borked it. - installed the patch panel but still have to terminate the cat6 setup for poe cameras that are just sitting there. I did install the doorbell camera though and a handful of wifi cameras - need to automate lights more

The list goes on much longer. Maybe it’s one of those things that just moves slow or is never really done.

Threadripper or AMD EPYC for Hyper-V Virtualization on Windows 11?

4 Octubre 2024 at 09:49

Hello everyone,

I'm looking to build a new system with around 32 cores and 64 threads because I need a lot of processing power and memory for my virtualization needs. I'm using Windows 11 and plan to keep upgrading my system over time. Since I'm new to this, please bear with me.

I plan to run a large number of virtual machines, each running only one software application on every Hyper-V VM. In my current setup, I have an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X with 64GB of memory. Each VM is allocated 3 CPU cores and 5GB of memory, and the usage is about 10% CPU and 50% memory per VM.

Given my requirements and desire to upgrade my system over time, should I go with a Threadripper or an AMD EPYC processor for Hyper-V virtualization on Windows 11? Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Note: I am aiming to get 196GB of memory and continue upgrading from there.

My new HomeLab "server"

My new HomeLab "server"

Few days ago I've got new Machine for HomeLab, Dell Optiplex Micro 3080 with i3 10100T, for Now with just 8GB of RAM(planning to upgrade), with Proxmox. It has 2SSDs, one Nvme 120GB for OS and system drives of some VMs, 250GB sata SSD for main data And external HDD for backups. Before i was running all my server things on old ThinkPad with Proxmox too. I mainly run things in Docker like AdGuard, PhotoPrism, UptimeKuma And some other Apps. And i run some things on DarkWeb So i have pfsense VM which creates own LAN for darkweb, blocks them access to my Real LAN And sends all traffic over OpenVPN (mainly bcs I'm worried what would ISP think, when they would saw that much tor traffic) I even run some clear web website over cloudflare tunnel (bcs I don't realy want to struggle with public IP for Now) I tried even PCIE passtrough for iGPU to use it in VMs, but with just 8GB i can't realy use it too much..

Need help buying a desktop server

I have the opportunity to buy a Powedge T320 for 30$ everything is in fact working and intact, this would be my first ever server. I want to use it for dedicated servers and network shares and just mess around with it. Would you guys recommend buying it? Also its very hard to find the specs online since it seems there are many different models of the T320

Are these worth learning about? I know they are very old, just wondering b4 discarding them/reselling for pennies if its worth plugging them in checking around? Cisco asa5510 and catalyst 3750 series

As the title says i got these for basically free, 6$ total i know they are old and probably very power hungry but for a few days of fun is there anything special about them? Or do most newer budget switches / firewalls have basically same and more? Thanks!

Use cases for PTP in homelab?

4 Octubre 2024 at 12:59

Hi I've recently got interested in PTP, planning to buy a GPS card + intel NIC to sync my time straight from GPS just for fun.

But I've got question, is there any use case for such precise time sync in normal home lab environment or any demos/labs/cool demonstration that require that level of precision?

In many videos media streaming is mentioned but for example snapcast that i am using, handles time sync by itself.

Seeking Guidance and assistance from my friends of homelab

Seeking Guidance and assistance from my friends of homelab

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice after experiencing a serious security incident in my home lab. My setup included around 15 Minecraft servers, 5 high-pop Rust servers, and an automation suite, all managed on an HP ProLiant Gen 6 with dual Xeon Gold processors and 128 GB of DDR3 RAM.

Unfortunately, I was brute-forced via an old enterprise switch and ended up ransomwared on my main Proxmox file server, affecting all my Windows machines. I’ve wiped everything clean and replaced my networking hardware, but now I’m at a point where I need to rebuild with security best practices in place.

Here’s what I’m hoping to achieve:

Network Design: I want to segment my network effectively to isolate different services. Server Setup: Fresh installations with the latest security patches on all servers. Security Measures: Implementing firewalls, strong authentication, and automated backups. Monitoring: Setting up centralized logging and regular reviews. Incident Response: Developing a plan for future breaches. I primarily work on workflow applications and user training, and I’d like to ensure that my Minecraft servers can quickly return to operation, as they provide a significant passive income and serve as safe spaces for local communities and children.

If anyone has suggestions or resources for best practices in securing home labs, I’d greatly appreciate your input!

The gear I have that I’m getting started again is listed I have a -super micro xdri 10 with dual xeon 2693 gen 3 I think with a few sas drives - I have some older forigate 60c and a 60d that I’m probably going to get something newer and more secure - tplink sg105 m2 -Dell 5820 with 2 nvme back planes with 2tb 980 evo pros and 128 gigs of ddr4 ram 2666 speed with dual rtx a5000 quatros with a nvidia connect x qspf - cisco nexus 93108tc 100 gig data center switch -I’m looking at getting like a ubiquity gateway pro - a series of hp prodesk g6-g7 that may host in a cluster - 3 Cisco phones I previously hosted in free pbx

Basically I have all gear that isn’t end of life now and want to learn actual best practice instead of leaving my administrator account as root (facepalm) Thanks

Ps Rip to the ransomwared mining rig that hasn’t mined in years :/

Starting a Homelab, complete newbie.

4 Octubre 2024 at 13:57

Hi guys and gals, I have been toying around with the idea of a home lab for the past year. Does anyone have any good information or tutorials on how to start up a home lab with room for progression later on? I have looked at YT Videos but I don't know a huge amount in regards to the below and would appreciate any and all help you are willing to offer up.

I would like a home lab for learning about Networking, Virtual Machines and Media Servers as well as using it as a Steam Cache and to create a more secure internet network.

I know about of people talk about Linux but I have very little exposure to it at work and have only used Linux on my steam deck in desktop mode.

Getting Started

4 Octubre 2024 at 14:03

Hello friends,

I am looking to build a homelab primarily to expand on network engineering skills and potentially a bit of devops stuff. My girlfriend is looking to switch phones and she just HAS to keep every single photo from her 1TB iPhone so I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to start building a homelab. With so many different ideas, videos, and resources around, I thought it would be best to just let you guys help me decide on what software to go with.

The plan is to have multiple older laptops (3 atm, 1 desktop, and a few old chromebooks if they could serve any purpose) with some flavor of Linux installed be chained together into a couple switches to be used as a private NAS that we will be able to access remotely. I've went ahead and bought a 12TB drive that I'll just move the photos over to for now but I was wondering what would be the best solution for this and what software you guys would suggest including the Linux OS's. I'm not overly proficient in anything but have foundational knowledge in most things to the point where I can figure most of the stuff out with a little bit of time. I've looked into TrueNAS and NextCloud but I'm just not sure if it needs to be that heavy or not. I'd also like one of the laptops to potentially but used as the controller for the whole operation. Anyways, I appreciate any help you can provide.

Recommended upgrades to Dell PowerEdge T710

4 Octubre 2024 at 13:51

I've been running a T710 for a few years now with Proxmox, mainly it has been my media hub (Plex/Sonarr/Radarr/etc.), but I've been trying to expand it for a while now, adding WireGuard for remote access/VPN, HAOS, PiHole, and the latest thing I've been trying is getting OSX working on it (I've never used OSX and like the idea of having a VM available whenever I want to remote into to use). Just got OSX working today, but I've noticed it is pretty slow, when doing menial things (minimizing windows takes a minute, some web pages just make it lock up, etc). I chalked it up to just OSX on Proxmox, but thinking about it, it seems like a majority of my VMs have been somewhat slowing down for a while now, not as quick on start up, lagging at random intervals, etc.

Just wondering if anyone has any recommended upgrades for it. Currently:

-150GB samsung SSD runs the Proxmox OS

-2x Xeon E5645 @ 2.40 GHz

-96 GB RAM

-2TB Dell HDDs

Which setup would you prefer?

4 Octubre 2024 at 13:46

Hi everyone,

At the Moment I use a small self built NAs based on a N100 and I am really happy. See the Build here: https://www.reddit.com/r/FormD/comments/1cy7724/formd_t1_v21_homeserver_nas/

Now with the Release of TrueNAS 24.10 i want to go full SSD, because the setup will live in my living room and I hate the fact that every once in a while the HDDs spin up. Second thing is I want to have the Chance to for more than two disks/ssds.

So I‘m thinking about two Setups:

  1. Another N100:
  2. ASUS Prime N100I-D D4
  3. 32GB RAM
  4. Corsair SF750
  5. m.2 to 6Port SATA Adapter
  6. 2x 4TB SATA SSD
  7. 1x 256 or 500GB SATA SSD for truenas
  8. 3 SATA Ports Left for possible upgrades
  9. all together in my much loved FormD-T1

  10. Go for tiny PC

  11. Lenovo M920q with Intel Core i5-8500T

  12. 32GB RAM

  13. small NVME in the wifi Slot for OS

  14. solder-in the second nvme Port on the bottom

  15. do the bigurcation-Mod for another two nvme slots: https://github.com/badger707/m920q-pcie-bifurcation

Which setup would you prefer? And why?

Could someone with vCenter 8 check something for me plz?

4 Octubre 2024 at 13:39

I have VCSA running as a Hyper-V guest on my Windows 11 desktop.(Broadcom investors hate him!!!) For me (at least) this is kind of a big deal as it gets vCenter out of my lone ESXi host. Not being able to use vCenter to fully work on my host because it's running the damned vCenter has been a major PITA.

I want to jot down how I got it working, Only I'm not 100% sure of, uh, precisely what made it work. I've been poking at this off-and-on for a few days in my spare time. My Linux skills are somewhere between will break your system in short order and don't give him anything sharp.

Can someone please run find / -name hv_* and let me know if any of the Hyper-V kernel modules are present on your VCSA? I'm particularly interested in hv_storvsc.ko.xz and hv_netvsc.ko.xz which would be under /usr/lib/modules/<ver no>/kernel/drivers.

If the above is affirmative, can you please also run lsinitrd | grep hv and see if your initrd contains any Hyper-V shit? If so, are the above two modules in there?
