It’s growing… why didn’t you all warn me this was addictive : New UPS Day

Picked this hunk up off eBay, “brand new” but had previously suffered some shipping damage, the back is a little wonky.

Still, works as it should, and a great replacement for the old Dell 1000w unit with dead batteries that I was previously using.

5min blog post about how I've setup Wireguard, PiKVM and a KVM to ..

24 Diciembre 2024 at 10:03

.. remotly manage my servers. [link](https://blog.brujordet.no/post/homelab/calling\_home\_for\_safety\_and\_convenience/)

Anyone else solved this with a different approach? Are there even any KVM switches with features to match PiKVM? I'm kind of surprised that this doesn't already exist, but I guess the market is mostly us.

Anyway it's x-mas so I skimmed over the technical stuff and focused on the motivational parts. So feel free to ask about the nitty gritty if you're about to venture on the same or similar project. :)

What's your "out of the box" solution for offsite backups? The crazier, the better!

24 Diciembre 2024 at 03:56

I don't have a whole lot of critical data in my home lab - well under 8TB, and that includes all my ripped DVDs and the like.

Actual REALLY important stuff like family documents and photos and the like? Probably under 1TB. But it *is* important to me. Historically I've used S3, but AWS obviously doesn't want small business accounts any more. They're nickle and diming us to death.

So I've been poking around and looking at rsync.net, and sync.com, and they seem relatively reasonably priced. But I'm curious as to whether anyone has come up with a cloud storage deal that won't break the bank? I was even playing around with building an EC2 instance with 4TB of "cold" storage drives to see how much that would cost. It's still plenty pricey.

Anyone got any killer ideas on how to sync up your important stuff to a cloud provider? I'm happy to consider anything... In fact, I'd love to see what craziness y'all can think of! <grin>

Gifted Server w/256 Cores

24 Diciembre 2024 at 13:58

Hello everyone,

I hope you’re all well. I’m reaching out to seek some advice and would greatly appreciate your insights.

I recently received a Supermicro 2025HS-TNR server as a gift. Here are its key specifications:

• Processors: 2 x AMD EPYC 9754 (256 cores total) • Memory: 256GB DDR5 RAM (4800MHz) • Storage: Multiple NVMe SSDs totaling over 100TB • Networking: Dual 25Gbps ports • Power Supply: Dual redundant 1600W units

While I’m excited about this powerful equipment, I’m unsure how to best utilize it given my current skill level and resources. I’m considering a few options, such as upgrading the RAM to 5600MHz and increasing it to 512GB or even 1TB. Another idea is to install software like Coolify and colocate the server at Equinix DC3 in Ashburn, which offers 40Gbps (2x 20Gbps) connectivity for around $500 a month. This location is also strategically close to many other companies’ servers, which seems beneficial.

As a one-person operation with a monthly income of about $4,000, I want to ensure that I make the most of this opportunity without overextending myself. Any suggestions on how to effectively use this server or recommendations for upgrades and hosting would be immensely helpful.

Thank you so much for your time and assistance!

Ps: I do not intended to sell, it is rude to sell a gift

Box it in or Pull it through?

Box it in or Pull it through?

So in my haste and impatience I did a good level of meh at trying to route these ethernet cables from my attic to my basement. I actually cut the holes and dry fit 2 inch PVC pipes to pull the cables through. Having renovations done and asked the contractor to patch up the drywall and install the pipe actually straight/level. They mentioned why just effectively make a box in that corner that goes from the ceiling to the floor. On one hand certainly wouldn’t have to worry about having a too many cables and needing a wider pipe in future. But idk what do you all think? What would you do?

My 1st SOC lab: it’s ain’t much but, it’s all mine..

My 1st SOC lab: it’s ain’t much but, it’s all mine..

This may not seem like a big deal to some but I started building my first at home SOC lab today on a Raspberry pi 5. I'm still very new to cybersec and have only been learning since September. Full disclosure: I did use an AI chatbot for a lot of this since I don’t know all of the python commands yet.

But, yea! I formatted a 1TB stick for a harddrive on the pi, configured Suricata IDS/IPS, and fumbled my way thru some app-layer protocols, stats logging, and file paths but I got it working and I'm really proud of myself! When I started learning in September, I knew nothing, so I took Network Basics & Endpoint Security on Cisco NetCad, hacked 4 beginner boxes on HTB, and I enroll in Per Scholas Jan 9 for my CySA+. I thought it would be a good idea to start building a home SOC so I could get some hands on experience.

Anyway, I still have the ELK stack, OpenVAS (easy line command), myDLP, Autopsy & Sleuth Kit to go and I'm doing this all open source because I’m pretty broke. Anyway, I’m still considering adding the Hive, Shuffle, and OSQuery or Falco for a more complete SOC solution once I fishing this part of the implementation.

Immutable Backup - What’s your strategy ?

24 Diciembre 2024 at 08:08

Hi all,

I’ve been in the homelab for a little while and have adopted pretty good backup strategies I think (multiple backup multiple locations etc).

Going into paranoid mode : the advantage of immutable backup is that even with root privileges on the entire ecosystem, you will still be able to retrieve your data.

So what’s your strategy in that ? A daily immutable backup seems overkill considering the likelihood of such a threat. But a yearly one to take another extreme is likely not enough as well.

What’s your approach to that ?

PS : I consider cold backup to be a semi immutable backup. As in if you have a dormant malware and connect your cold external hdd everything could be wiped out. I’m realistic though : this is a very unlikely scenario but still one to consider in some ways.

Why JBOD + HEAD over NAS (with compute)

24 Diciembre 2024 at 04:57

As I've looked into upgrading setup I've seen videos (Yes from that channel) that have gone the route of a massive JBOD box that connects through HBA to a head server which (i'm assuming through ZFS) uses software to manage the RAID.

My question is, would going the route of a JBOD enclosure while slowly adding drives with a separate RAID controller be better than say, having multiple NAS servers where an additional one comes online at a later time?

PSA: screws for SFF(2.5") drives in trays/caddies

24 Diciembre 2024 at 03:57

I don't know who needs to hear this...

I had a heck of a time finding the right screws - the ones I tried were either too long, too short, had too fat heads or wide of a bevel.

Finally found these at Amazon and they work great in my HPE caddies (G9 and HP StoreServ 20000):

50pcs Hard Drive Screws M3 x 4.7mm HDD SSD Hard Drive Mounting Screws

Not sure if the link is allowed or not (its NOT a referral link and I am not getting anything for it) so I put it in a spoiler tag - its just an amazon product link.

Looking for ideas

24 Diciembre 2024 at 14:42

So i have a tiny little home server this is pretty much my first venture setting up stuff
I'm hoping to upgrade my little server but i want to keep the form factor small most of the cases im seeing for "home nas" are using tiny flext atx psu's that are insane price (im not rich here) anyone know of decent nas cases that use SFX power supplies which seem a little more reasonable in price

Also i have 3 raspberry pi's at my disposal ..
- pi 3
- pi 3 with attached screen
- Pi zero with screen

would love ideas on what to do with these things .. most of the time seems either CASAos or Wifite (i like playing with pentesting / seeing if i can "break into" my OWN network

bpn-sas2-846el1 motherboard compatibility

24 Diciembre 2024 at 14:36

Hi, I have recently bought a Supermicro CSE-846 server chassis, with a bpn-sas2-846el1 backplane included. I want to use it as a storage server (24 sata hdds). My question is, can I use a Supermicro H11SSL-i motherboard and directly connect the sas ports from the mobo to the backplane? Or do you recommend a different motherboard? Or it is better to use a sas pci card instead of relying on motherboard sas ports? Thanks.

Replacing a Synology

24 Diciembre 2024 at 14:24

I'm looking to replace an 8 bay Synology NAS. I'd like to build a server to run proxmox and play with virtual servers (one of which to be a ZFS back up target /NAS).

Looking for recommendations that are expandable. I'm not that familiar with this end of the hardware spectrum.

I have a second Synology 8 bay that I might take down later and contribute the drives to the storage pool.

Rack mount is ok. Likely Ubuntu for the Virtual Servers.

First PC - Elitedesk G3 vs Prodesk G3

24 Diciembre 2024 at 14:20

I may be asking the wrong sub, or I may have an X Y problem...

...but I'd love your opinion as I often follow my (incorrect) instincts, or some infuencer / groupthink recommendation.

I mostly run Home Assistant, Octoprint and Frigate I'm not really interested in media.

my "setup"

I have "upgraded" from a Pi4 with SSD to an HP ProDesk 600 G3 SFF PC (£40 on ebay).

For hardware I have: - 2 4TB 3.5" drives in a USB caddy (currently unused, but intended for a raid 1 "backup" of a 4tb drive on my vid editing machine); and

  • the 2.5" SSD HA runs on (inside the Proeesk).

I feel I should sell the Prodesk and spend another £50 on an Elitedesk 800 G3 (two 3.5" drive bays and one 2.5" drive bay).

Questions

  1. For my purposes, is the Prodesk + USB caddy fine;
  2. Is there some basic software (for backup / availability / reliability) which means the Elitedesk with all the drives inside is the better choice; and
  3. Am I simply too much of a noob at this stage for those hardware options to make any difference

Sorry of that's vague, but I don't know what I don't know - I guess.

Finally posting a picture of my own server rack, and after a few updates

Finally posting a picture of my own server rack, and after a few updates

2024

Seeing a number of these so figured I would join in. Recently updated my home server rack with a rackmount UPS and a sliding rail shelf for the computer. Also moved the Hue bridge and modem to the front and added a fan. I have trouble with the hauppauge tuner often but I think having a fan blowing across it helps. Finally added an ICY DOCK to allow hotswapping ssd's, and now the connections are all 2.5G (and POE with the switch).

I've been running this server in this similar config since 2017 and still serves me well. Although I would have a couple recommendations on what I would do differently. This box handles the cable coming in, to the routing, to switch, to NAS (proxmox) and other devices. I use the tuner for OTA TV, which works ok but could be better. I also have a zigbee/z-wave stick for my smart devices. My computer runs proxmox.

Now for what I would do differently:

  1. Be sure to get a rack with at least 15" depth between the posts. This one is only 12", which gives you about 15" of usable space if you really squeeze it in. This would be ok, but the computer chassis requires 90 degree cables, and I haven't seen any chassis that is smaller than that. (Even though it is possible to make)
  2. Go at least 12U if you intend to rackmount all of these components. This one is 9U and it is pushing the limit here with a 2U UPS, 1U slide, 2U computer, 1U switch (POE, 2.5G), and an effectively 2U shelf for storing modem, router, dongles, bridges, etc.
  3. Use a 4U chassis. The problem with the 2U is the lack of HDD mounting options. It can only fit 2 drives in there comfortably. Getting a dock for the ssd's is a bit pricey, but well worth it for the flexibility. I was also limited in my choices due to the depth constraint of my server rack. I wouldn't need something much deeper than this chassis, but having an extra couple inches would prevent the spacing problem with the motherboard and the hdd's. ... And lets be real, who wouldn't want another couple inches?

All in all its worked out pretty well so far and handles everything I need for the house and network

Here is what it looked like 3 years ago. Ignore the computer on the left I use as a separate server:

How would I get 12 to 16 hard drives from my raid controller?

24 Diciembre 2024 at 00:56

I currently have a Supermicro Motherboard X10DRH-iT with AOC-S3108L-H8IR-16DD raid controller that says it supports 16 hard drives. It has 2 x SFF-8643 which is only about 8 sata connectors. How would I double the sata connectors to get either 12 hard drives or 16 hard drives. I dont think there is any SFF-8643 to 8 x Sata. What would be the best option?

DDNS Question regarding Cloudflare.

24 Diciembre 2024 at 12:33

Hi Guys

Got a quick question, I new so please go easy :) I have setup NPM with Cloudflare, I'm using a A record for my domain pointing to NPM and Cname for Sub-Domains. I am using DNS challenge and just want to keep everything local for now. Everything is setup and working fine! I would just like to know since I don't have a Static IP what will happen if it changes? Will Cloudflare auto update or what do I need to do?

Thanks in advance..
