Atrocity Exhibition

Atrocity Exhibition

Back in 2022 I figured a way to extract horror imagery from pure Stable Diffusion 1.5, by crafting intentionally confusing prompts and using pipes to mix similar concepts (like bones|tubes or skulls|masks).

When SD 2.0 came out, I noticed, much to my disappointment, that as the model got better at drawing stuff, it also got worse at getting confused by my prompts. The new models were making too much sense of stuff, so I abandoned my horror experiments.

Today I had the idea: "What if I generate horror pictures in SD 1.5 and just refine them in a newer model?"

These are the results: Each picture was generated in SD 1.5 at 512x768 with prompts that mix disturbing concepts (skulls, insects, machines, magic etc) in a way I find interesting. After generating a bunch of these, I loaded up SDXL and began refining the ones I liked the best, increasing the resolution to 1024x1536 and repeating the same prompt with some exceptions: whenever the original image came to feature something I didn't plan for (like having lamps, or a cape, or angel wings, or goggles) I added that word to the prompt, adding more elements to the mess SDXL had to work with.

The last picture in the gallery was done by ChatGPT, after I showed it one of the images and told it to recreate it as the photo of an art installation in a museum.
