A Huge Destiny 2 Exotic Mission Is Coming Soon, And It's Made Possible By The Game's New Episodes

In the aftermath of The Final Shape, Destiny 2 developer Bungie has taken a new approach to seasonal storytelling. The first "Act" of this new approach--Episodes comprised of three Acts each--has wrapped up its story, but players have noted that the new Episode-based structure doesn't feel all that different to seasons so far. According to Bungie, there's much more on the way, and the new setup is enabling it to build one of its biggest Exotic missions ever, which will release later in 2024.

"We're going to finish some threads off, but we're also going to start opening up some doors to new stories to be told," game director Robbie Stevens said to GamesRadar. According to Stevens, Act 2 will introduce "a completely new set of activities" on top of the new Breach Executable activity and will take players deeper into Nessus as the planet transforms. Act Three will see a new Exotic mission debut, one that Stevens described as being an ambitious step forward for Bungie.

"We have an Exotic mission coming in Echoes Act Three," Stevens said. "It is one of the biggest Exotic missions we've ever built, and it's only possible because of this new content cadence. The ability for us to build this massive Exotic mission--literally one of the biggest--it wouldn't have been possible in the past. This is where we see the [development] team taking the opportunity, their willingness to change, their willingness to adapt to this new cadence with us, and really seize the opportunity to expand Nessus, expand this world."

George R.R. Martin Offers Cheeky Response To Elden Ring Film Rumors

While he may be focused on Westeros, author George R.R. Martin might be looking at bringing The Lands Between to the silver screen in the future--or even the small screen. The man famously known for Game of Thrones had quite an intriguing reply about the scuttlebutt regarding an Elden Ring movie.

Spotted by IGN, Martin wrote on his personal blog about a possible Elden Ring film unprompted. "Oh, and about those rumors you may have heard about a feature film or television series based on ELDEN RING... I have nothing to say," he said. "Not a word, nope, not a thing, I know nothing, you never heard a peep from me, mum mum mum. What rumor?"

From Software president Hidetaka Miyazaki got the ball rolling when he said "there's interest" in making a film adaptation of Elden Ring. Miyazaki added that they would need a "very strong partner," and Martin definitely fits that criterion as a producer on HBO's Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. Plus, for those who don't remember, Martin helped out on Elden Ring.

Zelda-Themed Nintendo Switch Controller For Handheld Mode Gets Big Discount

Hori's The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom-themed Split Pad Pro is on sale for $48 at Amazon. Normally $60, this special-edition iteration of Hori's Joy-Con alternative with superior ergonomics is part of Amazon's current slate of Lightning Deals. As such, quantities are very limited, so you shouldn't wait long to snag one if interested.

Hori Split Pad Pro - Tears of the Kingdom edition
Hori Split Pad Pro - Tears of the Kingdom edition

The Hori Split Pad Pro is GameSpot's current pick for best Switch controller for handheld-focused players, and for good reason: it gives you a full-sized, ergonomic controller experience in handheld mode. The buttons, the sticks, triggers, and D-pad are all much larger on the Split Pad Pro than they are on the stock Joy-Cons. So considering how cramped the standard Joy-Cons are, especially if you've got big hands, the ergonomics of the Split Pad Pro are a big relief.

On top of that you've got two remappable buttons on the back, and a turbo function. It lacks vibration and NFC support for Amiibo, though, and you can only use it in handheld mode--they don't work as motion controllers or as solo Joy-Con for multiplayer.

First Hellboy: The Crooked Man Trailer Is Full Of Death, Demons, And Big Guns

The first trailer for Hellboy: The Crooked Man has gone live, and this time, Mike Mignola's famed comic-book character is headed to the American South to take on sinister forces in the Appalachian mountains. 12 Strong's Jack Kesy dons the signature duster and right hand of doom for this new adventure starring Hellboy, and the first trailer teases a film much creepier than previous Hellboy movies.

Imagine if Hellboy and the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense wandered into one of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead movies, and you'll have a good idea of what to expect in the trailer following its reveal on Entertainment Weekly.

Set in the 1950s, Hellboy: The Crooked Man is based on the comic-book mini-series of the same name and sees the BPRD agent tracking down a dangerous demon collecting souls for the devil. This is the first Hellboy film since 2019's reboot bombed at the box office, ending any chances of a sequel being greenlit.

Nintendo Has A Simple But Effective Plan To Stop Switch 2 Scalpers

Nintendo has a plan to combat the potential scalping of its Switch successor: one that boils down to making certain that there are enough units available to satisfy demand when it's eventually released. In a Q&A session during a shareholders meeting, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa explained how the company will take on the reseller market.

"As a countermeasure against resale, we believe that the most important thing is to produce a sufficient number to meet customer demand, and this idea has not changed since last year," Furukawa said (translated via IGN). "In addition to this, we are considering whether there are any other measures that can be taken to the extent allowed by laws and regulations, taking into account the circumstances of each region."

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Switch consoles became sought-after items. The global semiconductor shortage in 2021 saw supply shrink, but echoing previous statements regarding availability, Furukawa added that Nintendo is anticipating that it'll have enough stock to combat scalping.

Metal Gear Movie Is Still Coming, Producer Gives Promising Update

A movie based on the Metal Gear Solid game series is in the works, and has been for many years, but how is it coming along now? Producer Ari Arad gave a promising update recently, saying he expects people to be happy about how it turns out, if it gets made.

"We're working on the script some more, but I can't talk about it yet," he told Brian Crecente's Game. "I think everyone's going to be really excited and surprised. I think getting Metal Gear right will obviously be amazing because I think it's a lot more meditative than some of the other adaptations. Personally, I want it to be terrific."

The script has been in the writing process for some time, it seems. In 2017, Jurassic World's Derek Connolly was reported to have written a script for the film. Then in 2022, actor Oscar Isaac, who was at one point attached to play Solid Snake, said the team was still trying to find the story.

SEGA's New Crazy Taxi Game Is Open World and Multiplayer

Probably still a ways off.

Let's be honest — everything we're playing right now is just filling time until the new Crazy Taxi is out. As part of a big new push to bring its beloved back catalogue into the modern age, SEGA is producing a brand new Crazy Taxi, and a recent recruitment video has revealed some new details about the arcade racer.

Various people from the development team talk about the new entry, discussing how it differs from previous games in the series. The two main things to take from this are that it'll be set in an open, explorable, "theme park-like" city, and that it'll be multiplayer.

UK Sales Charts: Elden Ring Appears in the Top 10 Not Once But Twice

Shadow clone.

It might not be topping the chart, but both physical editions of Elden Ring are currently in the UK's top 10. The regular version of FromSoftware's celebrated action RPG is currently in fourth, up from number 15. Meanwhile, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree Edition — which includes a voucher code for the DLC as well as the main game — is at number six, down from its debut in second.

The rest of the list is more or less what you'd expect. Luigi's Mansion 2 HD debuts at number one, pushing down EA Sports FC 24 to second place. Hogwarts Legacy holds steady at number three, and the never-ending marathon continues for Grand Theft Auto V, which sits at number nine.

George R.R. Martin Appears to Tease Elden Ring Adaptation for Film, TV

"What rumor?".

A Song of Ice and Fire author and official Elden Ring lore contributor George R.R. Martin appears to have teased a movie or TV adaptation of the FromSoftware game really could be in the works. Following on from comments made by creator Hidetaka Miyazaki, who didn't see any reason to "deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring", Martin added more fuel to the fire.

In a new post on his blog, he said: "Oh, and about those rumors you may have heard about a feature film or television series based on ELDEN RING… I have nothing to say. Not a word, nope, not a thing, I know nothing, you never heard a peep from me, mum mum mum. What rumor?"

The Obligatory Helldivers 2 Isn't As Popular As It Was Headlines Have Started to Emerge

It's not a surprise, is it?

There are fewer people playing Helldivers 2 now than there were when the game absolutely exploded to an unprecedented level earlier in the year – but probably still more than anyone initially expected. A slew of headlines about the game’s supposed decline started circling on social media during the slow summer weekend just gone, which pointed out that the title attracted a 24-hour peak of “just” 45,315 gamers on Steam over the last 24 hours. That’s obviously a lot less than its all-time high on the platform of 458,709.

Of course, all games experience some kind of decline in popularity in the months immediately following their launch – it’s as normal as night transitioning to day. Arrowhead will obviously want to pull players back in with future content updates, and while it clearly never planned for this kind of success, we know it’s ramped up its roadmap after selling over 12 million copies to date.

The Biggest Game Releases Of July 2024

We're officially in the second stretch of 2024, and this is where the release schedule starts to pick up some momentum. Interestingly, July is shaping up to be a month where live-service games are in the spotlight. You have the new Final Fantasy 14 expansion, Dawntrail, launching on July 2 alongside Nexon's The First Descendant, and just two days later, Genshin Impact developer Hoyoverse launches Zenless Zone Zero.

Beyond a trio of games jockeying for your valuable attention, there are also some good-looking smaller games on the horizon. Slaycation simulator Dungeons of Hinterberg balances dungeon-exploration with socializing at a resort set in the Alps, Anger Foot will let you reboot crime in its ugly face, and Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn brings a gun to a sword fight.

Originally scheduled to launch on July 25, Frostpunk 2 has been delayed to September 20 so that developer 11 Bit Studios can address feedback it received from the recent beta and add more features. "We know this is not the news you wanted to hear," the studio explained in a Steam blog post. "However, we believe these additional features are something you deserve to see in-game on day one, not in a patch added after the release. We can only hope you understand that our decision comes from a place of wanting to create the best game possible for you."

For more in July, you can see the rest of the highlights below, and for a broader look at the rest of the year, you can check out 2024's upcoming game release dates.

As a Descendant, you'll use your unique abilities and firepower to drive back the Vulgus before they conquer the continent of Ingris.

Zenless Zone Zero

  • Platforms: PC

If you're in the mood to kick some ass--quite literally--Anger Foot will grab your attention with its glutes-and-shoot action. It's up to you to stomp out crime as you take on an army of gangsters, clearing out slums, sewers, and skyscrapers along the way. When you're not putting the boot to gangs, you can dress your lean and mean kicking machine with some pretty sick kicks.

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition

A compilation of NES-themed minigames focused on speed, Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition looks like it could be a blast from the competitive past. There are over 150 minigames spanning 13 different NES titles, including Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and more. While the game can be purchased digitally, the physical edition looks great as it comes with stickers, art, and a replica of the golden 1990 Nintendo World Championships cartridge. At $60, that's a lot more financially palatable than the authentic version which sold for an absurd amount of cash a decade ago.

Deluxe edition
