Hey All, I was looking on facebook marketplace and saw this microserver up for sale. I was wondering if this is still a good option or starter homelab? I don’t have much knowledge on servers but am wanting to start a home lab. Hoping someone could share some advice or wisdom. Thank you! Are these older servers/switches Homelab viable?
Came across a listing while browsing marketplace. I am admittedly pretty new to homelab-ing and have been running a plex server on an old laptop and a virtualized home assistant for a few years so I'm not too well versed in server hardware. From what I do know, these appear pretty old, but I'm curious if there is any diamond in the rough I am unaware of? [link] [comments] |
Buying Ebay Stuff After A Few Drinks
After and during quites a few gins, I stumbled across this by accident and went for it becuase it looked nice. Had no real plan and no idea what to do with it. The guy in the UK who sold this says he has 50 more (could sell in bulk). They were used once for a media production and then in dry storage since. Intel N4200 TDP 6W (Intel HD Graphics 505) 2 x Realtek 1gb nics 4 USB 2 2 USB 3 1 USB C 2 DP ports DDRL3 4gb (8gb max only 1 slot) 32Gb mSata drive Atheros Dual-Band 2x2 802.11ac/a/b/g/n 1 Full size mPCIe socket 1 Full/half size mPCIe socket (shared with mSATA) 2 mSATA (1 shared with full/half size mPCIe) So what to do: Opnsense - I aleady have a 4 port low power mini pc with pfsense. Home assistant - not really into that as nothing in my home needs it. Media box - I use kodi on windows platform, maybe librelec on this? Anything else I've not considered to inspire me please? Thanks and cheers. EDIT: forgot to say this is an OnLogic ML350G-10 [link] [comments] |
IPV6
I'm going down an educational IPv6 rabbit hole (very fascinating). I've seen a lot of people complaining about only getting a "single" /64 subnet with some of their ISPs and demanding to get a /60 or /56 so they can have "more subnets".
*shocked pikachu face*
I'm just learning about IPv6, but a /64 subnet gets you 18 quintillion addresses. Why on earth do you need a single subnet to have 18 quintillion addresses? I feel like i would be happy with a /112 subnet as that gets you as many addresses as the 192.168 private ip space. but even in IPv4, most people would use a /24 or /23 per vlan.
If i had a /64 ipv6 i could divide that into 281 trillion subnets the size of the 192.168 ipv4 space.... thats like having 281 trillion off the shelf routers...
is there some practical reason people want an entire /64 subnet per vlan? something other than the number of addresses available?
EDIT: so much good info here. Thanks everyone. I am now planning on using /64 for each subnet. I requested a /56 in my current Asus router and it gave me a /60, which is more than enough for my home "enterprise" network. Once i get my OPNsense network fully built and switch over from my Asus i will be building every VLAN to have a /24 v4 and a /64 v6 network.

What to host on Homelab ?
Hello, I am a newbie into making my own homelab, it will be a learning project for me which will help me dive in to managing, troubleshooting and designing my own Infrastructure, private Network and Storage solutions. The purpose for this project is to navigate through all the challenges that comes along the way and enjoying the perks of private homelab.
I would like to have a NAS with remote access, a firewall configured with Pfsense and a VPN. I would like to know what else I should/can host and what components (Infra and Network) should I have to achieve this project.
Ps: I have a Raspberry Pi Cluster where I run several services including Pi-hole, Proxmox, home assistant and plex.
Looking forward to your kind suggestions and tips to kickstart my journey on implementing this project.

Beginner to networking
Hey you guys might remember my dumpster score of those old Cisco 48port poe switches. got them powered on amd really wanting to learn how to use them but the thing is I have no idea how to use a managed switch nor how to use a smart switch. Only ever used unmanaged. I'd really like to find out how to, Is there any videos or documentation or people that are willing to help me learn? My network knowledge is very basic like setting up consumer router with very basic knowledge, working with unmanaged switches as well as networking terminations and cable runs (electrician by trade so I've run a lot of data cat5e cat6 for building for fresh instals) I don't know anything about accessing a switch or using poe. Switch x2 are WS-C3750X-48PF-S with both stack data cables and power sharing cables. Also both switches run off one power supply in top switch [link] [comments] |
Should I do SLi for 1080ti?
Finally built my dual E5 2696v4, 256gb ddr4 2400, GTX 1080ti build! I use it for running multiple VMs for testing my mobile games. Surprisingly, I can get it up to 36 instances while only using 45-50% of cpu and ram, but my 1080ti is already at 90%. I’ve already locked the fps My goal was to run 30 instances so I guess I got what I wanted, but I can’t help but wonder why if I got another 1080ti and go sli? How much more raw GPU would that give me? Would that allow me to go all the way and run like, 72 instances?? [link] [comments] |
Acemagic AM06 pro
Hello, everyone. Has anyone used this mini PC?
I'd like to know if it's a good choice for a home lab.
What's the manufacturer and model of its built-in network card?
Thank!

Advice for a teacher
I am an information technology teacher for high schoolers in his first year, that lacks experience in IT. Kids really emphasized on doing hands on material. The curriculum is aligned with net+ and sec+. The principal is open to help in terms of purchasing. So far I have requested, routers and packet tracing to be installed.
Is there anything I should buy to help facilitate student learning?

Locked out of my server for reasons I don't understand
I have a salvaged Dell Optiplex 9020m with an intel core i3 processor on my network running Ubuntu server. I've had it up and running for a couple months now with no real issues to speak of. I have it set up so it's headless; I generally SSH in to work with it but I have it set up so I can hook up a monitor and keyboard quick and easy and login directly if necessary.
It's a long story, but basically because I'm still cutting my teeth on networking/self-hosting and the like, and still building familiarity with using the CLI, especially for things like vim, it was too much of a struggle at first to get SSH to work with public keys. So, for a time, I was just using password verification, since my lab is behind two routers, I'm not working with anything all that sensitive yet, and I don't have anything exposed to the internet. I realize that it's generally not preferable, so two days ago I finally knuckled down and figured it out. Hurrah. Since my laptops were (I thought) correctly configured to sign in with pubkey authentication and (I thought) I had direct access to the box, it seemed like the right idea to disable password authentication and just use the keys.
It worked for about 12 hours. For some reason, my keys, which have not changed, are now being rejected by the server. What's worse, now, for some reason, my monitor isn't getting a signal from the host when I go to login directly. Before, I would just plug in the monitor, tap a key on the keyboard and there was the login prompt. Now, the monitor just powers on briefly before indicating it's not receiving a signal and then it goes back to sleep.
Hard rebooting the host with the monitor plugged in, stdout is displayed, and I can see that the computer is going through its' usual boot sequence. No errors or anything unusual that I can see, but there's a lot of text and it moves too quickly to say for sure. Once it's done booting, the monitor loses signal and I'm left in the dark.
It seems to be running fine; I can see it on the network, and access the samba shares it's hosting; it's responding to pings and serving responses to HTTP requests. However, I can't interact with the main filing system in any meaningful way to begin beating my head against the 'troubleshooting SSH' wall again.
Apologies if there is a simple answer to this that seems obvious, or a thread where this question has already been answered. I'm self taught, still very much in a learning and discovery phase, and I don't know what I don't know, but I know it's a lot. The whole reason I'm asking here is because I don't even know where to start googling on this one and I have yet to have a positive or even fruitful experience on stack exchange. Please be kind, I'm not looking for someone to fix this for me. I'd be happy with a trail of breadcrumbs to start following. It would be a fairly minor inconvenience, and probably the path of least resistance to just go nuclear and start with a fresh install, but I'd prefer to learn from the experience of fixing it instead.

Make Old Gaming PC Powerefficent
Hey Guys, i want to use my Old Components, R5 3600 and a GTX 1660, as a Server but im kinda worried about the Powerbill.
I was think between 100-150 Watts most of the Time wich is where i live 500-700€ per Year only for the Server wich is quite a bit.
I was thinking about underclocking the cpu and get a efficent Powersupply. I was also think about just selling it and get a Nuc/Mini-PC.
What are your Recommendations😁

question about nic and proxmox + truenas
Does it makes sense to use two servers, each one with a mellanox 40gbps card, but one will be focused on running proxmox with some VM's and the other with Truenas. And the idea is to connect one nic into the other directly, without any switch (because its hella expensive) and make sure that Truenas will provide storage for proxmox.
Btw, iscsi or nfs?

I just built my home file/media server and want to upgrade it
The setup: R3 2200G, 8GB ram, random raid card, 8x4tb wd red (not the shitty new one) raid 5, 10gig network card. Running win server 2022.
Which would be the ideal component to upgrade? I use it as a file server and for streaming with Plex. I'm thinking about buying more ram, because I just bought this CPU which was a huge upgrade compared to a random Athlon CPU and got rid of the GPU (for lower power consumption and I use software encoding)
Other thing is that I have 4x250gb ssd and I'm thinking maybe I could use them as some kind of buffer for faster transfer speed.
Any suggestions?

Home NAS - mATX or 2U/4U rack case?
I'm planning to build a home server on i5-12400. I'm trying to decide how to put it together. I could either build it in a node 804 and put it on my desk or try and put it into either a 2u or a 4u case and rack mount it, which would allow me to get an ATX board.
I've never built a rack-mountable pc, so I need advice. I'm afraid that I won't be able to provide quiet cooling to it. All in all, I think I would prefer to go with a rack mount.
In that same rack I will also have a couple of sff PCs, a modem and a switch. I will keep it under my desk, so I really want it not to be loud.
Is there anything I'm missing in terms of the rack-mountable server? Or maybe I'm just fretting about nothing?

Data Messi wants it all
I'm a Data Messi regarding all aspects of media.
I run a TS-832X with 8x20Tb NAS, but it needs more performance to host a real media server and big loads for Media handling. I upgraded to a TVS-h1688X. I have some things set as my goal, but there are some things I'm missing since I'm not from IT. I hope some people can help with the way/things I need to realize a more or less fully automated Media server with auto downloads and private hosting so I can stream for myself on the go.
