I just moved into a new house (yay finally a home owner) and have wired my house with fresh CAT6, the latest Unifi gear (yea I know) and have always wanted to mess around in home server tinkering. I've built servers for SMB's for the last ~14 years at my job working for MSP's but never have done the same for myself. I am familiar with technologies such as virtualization, containers etc.

I am curious what kind of hardware seasoned homelaber's in todays market would chose if they had a realistic (~$2k budget) that could practically do anything you wanted.

It seems at least according to YouTube... Mini-PC's are now more popular than older enterprise hardware. I can see their point in terms of power draw.

When it comes to modern Mini-PC's is Intel cooked or still outperforming AMD's counterparts for a ProxMox server?

If you have a rack and still want to be power conscious is there a rackable option out there that makes sense?

I am not afraid to go fully custom, I just don't know where to really start. I feel like all the tutorials are super outdated saying buy old enterprise stuff OR the newer stuff says get this BeeLink or this NUC....

Anyways, I know this is kind of a lazy post asking for homework answers but any suggestions on a starting point would be appreciated.

Howdy folks. I have a situation where I have a Proxmox host I have setup is connected to a UPS, but that UPS for some reason does not have a data interface at all (I guess it was cheap). I was thinking of setting up a crontab command that runs every 5 minutes, and if a smart network switch that is NOT connected to the UPS isn't responding for more than 1 minute, it initiates a shutdown of my Proxmox host (as it would only be unresponsive if power goes out).

Has anyone done something like this? Just wondering what options I have. Would rather not buy extra equipment or replace the UPS if avoidable as it was only just purchased recently. Suggestions appreciated.

I'm building a server tailored to my needs and would appreciate some advice. Here are my key requirements:

• Operating System: Windows 11
• Virtual Machines: Running numerous Hyper-V virtual machines on Windows 11
• Resources: A substantial amount of memory, approximately 200-300GB, along with a high CPU count
• VM Purpose: My VMs are primarily used for data preprocessing and model training in a distributed machine learning project. Each VM accesses datasets from a shared NAS folder, enabling parallel processing to accelerate the model training process.

I'm considering the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X (64-Core, 128-Thread) as it seems like a cost-effective option. However, I’m uncertain if it’s the right choice since it’s an older model and there are newer options available. While I don’t anticipate needing more than 64 cores immediately, I’d like to know my options if I decide to upgrade in the future.

So, I just got myself a Dell PowerEdge R7515 last week with the following configurations:

CPU: AMD Epyc 7413

RAM: Samsung LRDIMM 8x64 GB 2666 MHz

12x3.5" Backplane + 2x 750W PSU

It was running fine up until last night, when I shut it down and unplugged to move it a bit. (I shut it down properly in the OS and wait until the IDRAC shows that the unit is completely off before unplugging it.) When I plugged it back in, something strange happened. My PSU clicked three times and all the LED in the unit blinked three times as well, then all LED became steady on like it normally would. My ethernet ports both lit up and my SFP+ port also lit up. However, my IDRAC is dead. I waited for 45 minutes and it still dead. Power button also doesn't work, but IDRAC status LED show steady blue similar to no CPU case here:

Since Epyc is an SoCs, I learned that with dead or no CPU, IDRAC wouldn't initialize, which is why it doesn't response to my long press of the button in attempt to reset it. My IDRAC is inaccessible and the front panel has nothing lit up aside the IDRAC LED.

I have tried literally everything that I can find in this subreddit already including:

- Swap the PSU positions

- Try one PSU at the time

- Try plug in PSU outside the server (Both PSU spin up normally)

- Clean and reseat CPU

- Remove everything and boot with minimal configuration

- Unplug backplane

- Remove PERC

- Try different power source

- Replace CMOS battery

- NVRAM_CLEAR Jumper

I wonder if there is anything else I can try? From what I read up, seems like I have a dead CPU here (Not a big deal as I plan to upgrade anyway). My motherboard LED codes are follows: DS1 (Solid), DS4 (Solid), and DS6 (Blink). Could my motherboard be dead as well? Is there anything else I can try? I'm also curious about the cause. Is it just pure bad luck and CPU is about to blown to begin with or I potentially killed it accidentally somehow? Appreciate your help!

I currently run unraid on a machine with a Ryzen 9 5900X, 64gb memory and 80TB array. I run quite a few dockers (Plex, all the arrs, unifi, bookstack, etc) I was running Home Assistant as a VM, but recently made some changes.

I had some issues with unraid that took down my server for a few days. During this time I realized the value of splitting up some of my services onto different machines. I've since moved HA, MQTT, Node-Red and a few other HA related services onto a dedicated mini PC so that my home automations still work even if I shut down unraid for maintenance. I'm also maxed out on the number of drives I can put in my current case, so expanding the array in the future will require some new hardware.

So I'm thinking of building two machines. One strictly for unraid/storage and a second one for docker/VMs. I'm looking at a R630 with as much cpu horsepower and memory as I can afford and then a R730xd with 12 - 3.5" drive bays for the unraid machine. Does this sound like a good plan? What would you do? I've got a good bit of experience with dockers on unraid, but building something new will be a learning experience. I'm assuming I'll run some flavor of linux like Ubuntu with Docker, is this right? Any recommendations for cpus for each machine? I'm assuming the unraid machine being strictly for storage I won't need much cpu power or memory, right?

I'm just starting to think about this, so it'll probably be early next year before I make any moves. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Looking to condense homelab down to 1 pc. Looking at Micro Center deals. Should I go AMD with a 1660 Super that I already have? Or should I go Intel? I need enough PCI lanes to support a HBA card and the graphics card. Main uses for this rig are:

-Proxmox as the hypervisor

- Windows 10 VM for Blue Iris Camera System

-Unraid VM for NAS, Plex, and the ARR suite.

• Trying to figure out if its better to transcode through the 1660 Super or a 12th gen Intel CPU

- Looking into home assistant

- Looking into hosting my own personal cloud storage

Power consumption, noise, and heat are things under consideration. Really only need to replace CPU, CPU Cooler, and MB. I have everything else already.

Greetings folks. Not a complete networking newbie here, but I am looking to elevate my learning and home network with a layer three switch. Have done quite a bit of searching online and haven’t really come up with any good recommendations, so thought I would ask here. The only requirements are between 8 and 16 ports, a web interface, and somewhere under $600 would be awesome. Open to any other features though. Thanks so much for the help. For a little more information, I do have some very basic initial use cases that probably any layer three switch will satisfy. But this will primarily be a learning tool for me. So something with not a terribly painful learning curve would be nice. But something with enough advanced features down the line would be great as well.

Long story.... Cloned a Server 2019 M.2 drive I had in another box. Put it in this Z390 box that includes a nVidia 3060. Machine booted up fine. Just needed to install various drivers. Shut it down to install the Intel X520 NIC that was also in the old server so the drivers should already be on this cloned drive. Attempted to boot and nothing. No post screen at all. Just powers up runs through the checks and reboot. Zero display. Decide to pull the nVidia card and try with onboard vid. Nothing. Same issues. Tries to post then reboots...rinse repeat. Pulled the hard drive and same results. Error code stops at D9 from what I can tell since there is no error code 09 for this board. I reset CMOS and also pulled the CMOS battery. Nothing. It will not post and nothing on the monitor. It also looks the the VGA diagnostic LED on the mobo stays lit while the D9 error is displayed either with the nVidia card in or using onboard vid.

I’m setting up a small home office network and could use some advice. Here’s what I’m working with:

TP-Link TL-SG108 (8-port switch) Raspberry Pi 4 Mini PC (N100, 16GB RAM, from AliExpress) Planning to get a Synology DS223j (2-bay NAS) for storing family photos, etc. 

I’ve been testing layouts using cardboard (yeah… cardboard), and I’m considering getting a Lanberg 10" rack because it’s super affordable. However, I’m a bit concerned about fitting everything in there.

My idea is to lay the NAS flat instead of keeping it vertical, but I’m not sure if I can fit two trays and still have room for all the devices. Has anyone managed a similar setup in a 10" rack?

Would love to see any pictures of your 10" racks with a switch, NAS, and other devices inside. Any tips or suggestions would be awesome!
