Receipt Wrangler September Newsletter

Happy September all, back with an update for September.

For those of you that are new, welcome! Receipt Wrangler is a self-hosted, ai powered app that is meant to make managing receipts easy. Receipt Wrangler is capable of scanning your receipts with AI (or entering manually), itemizing, categorizing, and splitting them amongst users in the app. Check out https://receiptwrangler.io/ for more information.

Let's jump into what got done last month.

Development Highlights:

Receipt Search (mobile, v1.5.0): Users can now search for receipts in the app, similar to how the desktop version works. It is a simple search that searches on receipt name.

View Filtered Receipt Widgets (mobile, v1.5.0): This was a fun task that resulted in a major refactor of all of the interactions between the mobile app and the API, as a result, a lot less jank in the code.

Tech talk aside, users can now view their configured filtered receipt widgets in the app, similar to desktop.

Receipt Queue Viewing/Editing (desktop): Users can now select several receipts from the receipts list, or from a dashboard and view/edit them consecutively, making a large amount of receipts a lot easier to edit back to back.

Misc desktop cleanup: Cleaned up how dashboard widget editing works and looks, since it was pretty weird and confusing before. Also cleaned up the comment section for receipts to make it fit in more with the current layout and design.

Breaking changes: In v1.5.0 of the mobile app, v5.2.0 of the API is required for the Quick Scan feature to work.

Coming Up in September:

The September is working on deeper enhancements and clean up. Receipt Wrangler has a fair amount of basic features, but many of them lack depth. For this month, the focus is on working towards deeper features, and bringing some parts of the app up to speed.

Receipt Share Quick Actions (mobile): This was supposed to get done last month, but couldn't get done in time. This will allow users to users to split by equal parts with users, and split by equal parts with personal shares, like in desktop.

Filter Updates: Will be adding a couple of fields to the filter, such date range and adding greater than or equal to/less than or equal to operations as well

Currency Display: Currently users can only control the symbol of the currency, but users need full control over how other users may see currencies in the app. Coming up this month, users will be able to have full control over the display of the currency. This will be a global setting.

User defined shortcuts (desktop): I often find myself going to the same spots in the app, but having to do so manually, which is annoying. So coming up, users will be able to define shortcuts for themselves that will display on the top nav bar of the app.

Add System Tasks for updating receipts: This will capture data for when a receipt is changed by a user, so that eventually users/admins will be able to see how the receipt has changed over time.

Download Image (mobile): Pretty straight forward, users need to be able to download images from the mobile app.

Zoom/Pan/Expand Image (mobile): Users will gain the ability to zoom/pan and expand image on mobile app.

Refresh Login Screen: Let's be honest, the log in screen is pretty ugly. Being one of the first screens every written in the app, it hasn't been updated in a long time. This month it will be cleaned up and made a little prettier.

More documentation: There is a lot of missing documentation around how things work in the app, specifically receipts. Will be adding more documentation this month covering receipts.
