Jellyfin struggling on my smart tv when it comes to .ass subtitles , any advice?

So this has been going for a week at this point of me trying to troubleshoot the issue. In general, normal subtitles just work. Dune 2 with 80gb starts playing almost instantly with subtitles turned on (srt I think). When it comes to .ass subtitles tho, I can’t find a pattern. I have shows that play instantly even with .ass subtitles turned on and others that need 20-30 seconds to load first. A few movies and shows will just load forever until Jellyfin gives up because of too many errors.

All of the above is done with exoplayer, all media is compatible with the tv and streamed directly without transcoding. QSV is configured and turned on aswell as subtitle extraction on the fly.

When I now switch to libvlc as player, the stuff that wouldn’t play ever would just start to play instantly, but subtitles would not appear despite them being turned on.

For testing I even downloaded vlc player for android tv, and it works exactly how it should. Instant playback and subtitles turned on.

Currently I believe that the subtitles itself are the culprit. Either the fonts are too many or not supported by the players. But I haven’t dealt with editing subtitles yet, so I first wanted to ask others on their opinion on what is going on. Anyone had similar issues and found a solution? I could generally use vlc , but at that point there isn’t even a point in hosting Jellyfin since vlc doesn’t need Jellyfin.
